LOWBALLERS.. wtf?!

Post by I am Me N U r U »

Little bit of a rant, little bit of a question here.

Why does EVERYONE lowball??

I have a near pristine condition 92 TT with 74k miles, 93+ engine, PERFECT trans, brand new paint, PERFECT cream leather interior... and everyone wants to pay 5k for it?

I'm in the middle of trying to work a deal with this guy, and he's all set to pay 7k, then he goes to KBB, see's it's private party value is 5k, and says "I'll only be willing to give you 5k for the car, or my car plus 2k (a modded 1g dsm)". I always sell for retail value, always have, always will. Then I check my e-mail this morning, and a guy says "5500 cash, and I'll take it this weekend". NOOO! :(

Why do people feel that these cars are worth so little? I mean, yea, the ones beaten to death by 16 year olds are bound to be problematic, and worth next to nothing, that's how I make my so much money doing what I do. But the ones that have been well kept, restored, etc. why all of a sudden do people almost flat out refuse to pay for a good quality car?

/rant

*sigh* people frustate me sometimes.

Stealths just seem to be worth so much less. I see turbo's go all day out here for $5-7k. The problem isn't so much the car, it's the demographic who want them. 25-45yo guys aren't really into the 3/S anymore, the people who really want them are the 16-25yos they don't have the desire to spend good money on a 15yo car known to be the underdog :(

I'm not a fan of lowballers either. I get on my girls case everytime she buys crap from Craigslist. A $30 lamp and she's trying to haggle 'em to $20 hahaha

Because the general consensus at this point is that these 20 year old cars are _not_ quality cars anymore. It's the low point in the market.
I hate to keep beating a dead horse, but look at the muscle cars..you could get a running #'s hemi for $500 in the 80's. (Sure, the gas prices hurt, but the age didn't help either).
Today you can't get one for under $50K.
I'm positive the 3S market will pick up but a few things will have to happen first:

No more rice bois. Since these cars are cheap, the poor rice bois can pick them up and wrap them around trees. That's actually kinda helpful. The more non-turbo cars they wrap around trees, the higher the concentration of turbo cars there will be (relatively).
Enthusiasts need to grow up and turn into collectors. I've seen a bunch of previous 3S owners say "I'll probably own another one some day"..and they probably will..when they retire, and want a little piece of their youth back, they may go pick one up..and they're going to pay a premium for one just like they had when they were a kid. I certainly would.

IMO, this is simply a bad time to be a seller in the 3S market.

fyi, i am talking out of my ass..these are just opinions that make sense to me. There's no factual evidence to back up any of this :D

it really sucks. the market has taken a nosedive in the last 2 years.

example... 2 and 1/2 years ago, I sold a black/black no sunroof 94 TT (bone stock, w/modas), in average condition, with 110k on it, for 11k, ... about $500 or so MORE than I was asking for the car days after I listed it.

About 2 months ago, I sold a black/black no sunroof 94 TT, 99 front end, CF hood, cross drilled rotors, exhaust, DP, bov, suspension, 3000GT spoiler/sideskirts, etc. with 67k miles, and I had a real hard time getting 11k for it. :( half the miles, twice the mods, and better condition, for the same price, and that car took me MONTHS to sell.

You're very right. And I honestly hope in another 20 years, these cars are going to be worth some good $$$. Maybe I should hold onto all of the shells that I've stripped for parts.

It's really taken a dive the last year or so. I can't sell these cars worth a damn anymore. And when I do, it's to some idiot that doesn't know his ass from his elbow, and just has too much money burning a hole in his pocket.

I hear ya, I was tossing out feelers for my car and I couldn't even get 20k for it. Thats 700+awhp, full nhra cage, built everything, a few scratches and 1 chip in the paint, in a rare dark blue 93 rt/tt.

So I parted the stuff I didn't need, kept the stuff I want, and put the project on the back burner for the time being.

If you come across one that needs trans work, let me know, I am in the market for another 1g tt, perferable white on black stealth.

unfortunately, if I come across one like that, at any remotely reasonable price, I usually buy it :D haha

If I do come across one though, and can't get it for whatever reason, I'll let you know :)

Aaron is probably right, but the problem is that it's going to take another 20+ years before the market will turn around and it will be worth good money to someone...and only worth money if it is rare...and it's gonna be tough to have a "rare" 3/S.

The Challenger/Charger are worth so much because they were piece of shit cars that rusted out and broke, even in the 70s :p Very few are left in good shape today AND they didn't sell many. They sold a TON of 3/S cars (relatively) and they aren't going to rust out and explode nearly as often as a 1960s Mopar being run 1000RPM higher than it should :p

Gotta keep in mind that in 15-20 years cars might not be running off of unleaded gas anymore too :p

We went through that mess for a year before the 99 Vr-4 finally sold........we got some real low ball offers. I was insulted almost to the point of saying fuck off to some of the offers LOL. And we still ended up selling it for a little less than NADA blue book. These cars are a dieing breed and it takes a very particular buyer.

I think the funniest offer was "can I make monthly payments to you"? Um how about no....

Only place you're going to get any decent money back from these cars is ebay.

I have to say as a 3/S owner I would never sell for many reasons. 1. my love for the car, I personally want to buy a few more and fix them up to pristine beasts, just to keep. 2. they are worth much more than they go for, but the market isnt there like with certain other cars made similarly during the same years that just happened to have a good movie to boost their popularity. I do hope more kids wreck the cars so there are fewer around, at the same time I just wish they would spin a bearing so we could part the cars out.

I've come real close to selling both of my 3S..on a number of occasions. But I haven't..Kate's terrified I'll sell them..not because she likes the cars, but because she's pretty sure I'll be miserable and unfit to live with :p (Well, she likes them, too).

Not only that..but I paid $18K for my Stealth and $30K for my Spyder..I'd be lucky if I could get $18K for both of them combined today.

I think I'm in it for the long haul..short of a catastrophic financial situation, I think I'll have them 'till I die.

I thought Spyders were worth $18k by themselves. You can sell both of them and put that $25k towards a zweet 'vette :D

Danyel tries to slip in a sell it comment from time to time. I dont talk and she knows not to push it. When we were looking at the mustang she said "If you trade in your car you can get the Saleen or Roush" Needless to say I am driving the VR-4. I would love a VR-4 Spyder though. I have a picture of one on the wall in my garage, its my car porn.

If I were rich I would buy up every 3/S for sale and hire on a team of guys to rebuild every one of them to pristine conditions and various specs. Thats is to say, if I were nelson.

As far as low balling that's just the game when you buy or sell cars. You never know when you low ball someone and they accept it. We owned a Ford dealership and I remember a few times when someone came in and said I have "such and such"( RV, Pickup, car, etc..) to sell because I'm getting divorced, lost a job, etc... We would have to use our cash to buy it, it wasn't a trade-in so you just shoot the guy an absolutely low price. This person is the one who needs the help not us. You would be surprised how many people would come back a few weeks later and ask if the deal was still good. This was a long time ago but I remember we got a huge RV that blue booked for about $25k for like $13k. The guy had it paid off and would rather sell it and hide the cash than sell it for more and give half to his wife in the divorce.

As far as these cars go I think the blue book is low because of all the headaches they create. The majority of them are parked in driveways needing repair. Plus the cost of maintenance on them is crazy. If I was buying one right now I would low ball because odds are it will need lifters, timing belt, water pump, tensioner, etc....

Just my 2 cents.

It really bugs me when people say that.

The Supra was a mechanically solid car with much lower production numbers than we had, and drastically fewer NA base models to detract from the 'image' of the TT models.

The FD3S RX-7s routinely sell for more than our cars, they didn't have a movie, and they're generally regarded as ticking time bombs just waiting for a popped Wankel to justify a small-block swap. Why do they go for more? The chassis is solid and they were built in very low numbers.
