3000GT left me on the side of the road

Post by Brandonscar »

It isn't the first time, and I expect it won't be the last time, but this time was the worse so far.

I was driving down an interstate at about 9PM last night. I was cruising along at about 70MPH or so. I have an automatic 3000GT SL. The ATX slipped into neutral, my engine revved to about 6,000 PRM. I pulled over to the side of the Interstate.

This has happened before. I knew it was going to die. Typically when this happens I put it into park, then back into drive and take off again. I was only going a few miles.

I barley get it off the interstate, thinking I would just hop right back on in a few seconds. I put the car in park. It locks in park!! It won't shift out of park.

There I am on a busy interstate, with my tires on the white line, and my car is stuck in park.

I start making calls with my hazard lights on. Several cars just barley miss hitting my car. So I get out of the car thinking that I don't want to be in it, if an 18 wheeler slams into it. I am standing on the side of the road, freezing my ass off, locating a tow truck.

I find one. I tell him over the phone we will just drop the car at my house a few miles away. He takes his sweet time getting there. About 1 hour. When he gets there he explains that I might as well get it towed to a shop it will save me the $100 hooks up fee in the morning. He knows where an aamco is.

I know aamco sucks in general, but I have limited options at this point. We take it to aamco. They are taking a look at it now.

I should have just bought a VR-4. This car has been giving me problems nonstop. But I do love it, so I keep on fixing her up. I know at this point with all that has gone wrong so far, I am just throwing good money after bad, but she is such a sexy bitch.

Mine has left me on the side of the road once. Turned out to be frozen. Weirdest thing. But it froze. Had it towed to the shop only to have it finally looked at later in the afternoon, Started right up.

That reminds me, I got to check my antifreeze :)

I'm working on my second transmission in my ATX. I replaced my old one with a used one 10k ago, and this one's already going. :cussmad:

First time I took it to Aamco. $350 to take it out, take it apart and tell me that it needed to be rebuilt for $2000+. No thanks...towed it home. But here I am again. :sigh:

I have a couple extra ATXs that can be dropped in....whenever there's a good time for it, and hopefully an extra boyfriend laying around. :whistles:

Worse still, they don't merely believe you're wrong; they need you to be wrong in order to protect the status quo. Yeah it has been slipping into nutral every now and again for about a month or so. I replaced the fluid twice and the filter. The levels were all good. I assumed it was my tourqe converter. This week I located a torque converter, but it wasn't here in time . . . .

I am sure aamco will screw me.

You may just need an end clutch pack. I've replaced these before and kept the tranny in the car. It's not too difficult if you use the vfaq and have a little mechanical aptitude.

Actually, a friend has a scrap ATX. If you pay for the parts, I can rebuild it & send it to you. All you'd have to do is pop off the cover and swap the assembly.

You were on the highway when yours slipped, right? So maybe you just need to replace the end clutch. It's easy to get to, and I hear it goes more than the others...

Except for me, I'm slipping in 1st & 2nd. :(

Hey thanks Mono. I suck at fixing a car; I usually break it more than when I started. However, I will mention it to the aamco guys so they at least think I am not a complete retard.

I am calling them now and telling them I think it is my end clutch. I will post up what they say. I am fully expecting them to tell me I need a new tranny and it will be 2K. whatever, the car is sexy, she deserves the attention.

I drove into work this morning in my civic, what a let down after DD the 3000gt.

If that's the case, shoot a PM to TSG on the board. She's parting out her ATX RT.

2k will get you a rebuild, but not a 'new' tranny. :eh:

There's no such thing as a 'new' 3000GT transmission these days. They're all rebuilt or remanufactured.

HOLY CRAP!!!

aamco wants 3100 to fix my tranny. My 4th gear plate is totally shot. I am not sure I am using the right lingo, but basically I ruined this tranny. The guy said it could be more if other things are screwed up in there after they open it up.

So I call another tranny shop I find here on the internet. That guy tells me I need it call this other guy because he is the best with mitsu trannys in this area. It seemed odd to have a mechanic refer me to another mechanic, but whatever.

I call the second guy. I tell him the story. He laughs, a lot. He says there is no way in hell they know my 4 gear plate is screwed up without taking the tranny out of the car. Aamco did not take the tranny out of the car. He said if I wanted he will get the car towed to his shop, no charge, and he will diagnose the issue, again no charge.

Sweet.
