Detent springs and balls - where does a guy find'em?

I'm beginning to make the stealth road worthy again before warm weather get's here.
Before I put it away in the garage last year, I was having a few issues with shifting after a tranny rebuild. Basically, it was just shifting rather hard into 1st and 2nd, and sometimes into 3rd. The clutch adjustment has been thrown out of the picture because it acts the same way when the car is turned off, and the linkage has been thrown out because I can take the linkage off completely, shift by hand from above, and it acts the same way.
After nosing around for a while, it was suggested to check the detent balls and springs to make sure they were alright, and the plate was positioned correctly. They seem to be on the side of the transmission somewhere, and *hopefully* easy to get to with it still in the car.
I know I could dig up some old PDF's and probably pin point the location - but that would require digging
Does anyone have a picture, or can someone describe what I'm looking for?
I'm ready for the warm weather to get here! (althrough we are getting 6-8 inches of snow today...................................
