Well, it looks like somebody tried to break into my car last night. This morning, I found that one of the locking hood pins had been partially pryed up and my carbon fiber hood had a number of scratches in it. It looks like somebody took a crowbar to it.

Although the car has a second, pin, I'm guessing they gave up once they realized the hood latch would need to be popped too. At that point, it probably wasn't worth triggering my alarm for the few seconds it would take to pop the hood and disconnect the battery.

The locking part of the hoodpin actually broke off during the incident (although you can't tell from the exterior). In addition, the carbon fiber directly underneath the pin appears to have some cracks in it. I don't think just replacing the hood pin is an option. I guess I'll be getting a set of Deft's low profile hood locks in the future.

Anyway, I'm pissed, but thank god for locking hood pins.

I'm also thinking that I may want to wire in some additional security features to my alarm. Maybe a second siren and a battery backup? In the meantime, I am going to drop my car off at my parent's place for a few weeks.

Yeah. Believe me, I was really pissed off about it this morning. But after I calmed down, I realized that a little bit of carbon fibern dammage isn't that bad. The hood can be repaired. The hood locks can be replaced. I still have my car (and everything inside of it).

Those hood locks have done exactly the job they were inteded to do: prevent the hood from flying up, and stop a criminal from unplugging the battery before the alarm sounds. Now its time to move the car until I can install a new (and hopefully better) set of locks. No sense in letting someone get a second crack at it.

now i dont know how possible this is, but maybe you can prewire a strong electrical current on your hood pins that activates when you turn on your alarm. that'll fry the next sucker who tries to pry open your hood pins with something like a crowbar or a screwdriver.

who knows? they could still be passed out next to your car to deserve a can of whoop ass?

I'd like an automatic computer/camera controlled tazer on the exterior of my vehicle's doors/hood.

Damn that sucks! But as others have said, it could have been worse.

I've got some Cianci body parts sitting around at my parents place though. Maybe I'll have to do a full body paint sooner than expected.

I picked up a pair of Aerocatch pins earlier today. After speaking with Deft, I decided to for the version that mounts to the inside of the carbon fiber hood (not the plus version). Its harder to install, but it there is no outer rim for someone to pry. Seems like a good idea to me.

I'm still wondering why they tried to pry the hood up? Must know the car or somthing. Dumbass thieves, Screw them.

My guess is that they wanted to get to the battery. No power = no alarm. Even if the alarm sounds when they finally get the hood open, it would take about 2 seconds to cut/unplug a batter cable.

Of course, since I have the stock hood latch still in tact, they would also need to break into the cabin in order to pop the hood. There would definitely be more alarm time involved, particularly since my alarm has a shock sensor.

I'm thinking that its about time to wire in a battery backup for the alarm. Maybe a second siren too. We'll see.

Now that I think about it, I'm wondering how well this would work for a CF hood. If the lip is under the hood, its going to require that a series of mounting bolts be drilled through the hood. I wonder of these six bolts distribute enough force to make the hoodpin useful at high speeds? It sounds like it defeats the purpose.

I emailed Deft about this a few minutes ago. If anyone is familiar with the standard flush (not Plus flush) locking pins, feel free to chime in.

Are you referring to the pins that are on JRinks car?

Jrink uses the Plus Flush hood locks...


The standard pins have the lip under the CF hood. They use a serious of bolts to hold the lock in place. Iceman's car has this kind...




Personally, I like the looks of the Plus style better (what's on Jrink's car). Maybe I'll give that a shot and hope nobody takes a prybar to it again.
