Kick one from the JC garage

Post by Jeremy C »

I'm torn. I know there is no way I can make this decision. So, here goes:

2 cars enter, one must leave.

Everyone here knows the SL. TT conversion, a few goodies here and there, and finally looking good. I've had it for nearly 6 years. This car was an impulse buy (like that snickers bar at the grocery store... just a little more expensive). Never meant to mod it, but things got out of hand. It was but to be a daily driver while I built...

My first car (I was a minor when I took those pics). '88 Chrysler Conquest TSi. I've owned this one 9.5 years now. It's been my perennial project car. I've been getting the itch to restore/mod it more and more over the last year or so, adn with each consecutive break of the SL my eyes keep turning back to the Quest. A 6G7X + T-56 will be surprisingly easy to install in this car. I have to do some frame restoration, and I'm sure I have countless hours of cleaning to do, but I really, really want this car on the road again.

Now I cannot work on both. Nothing short of a 6-figure salary could afford me the ability to have both cars on the road. The SL, though fast and gorgeous, doesn't have the same character as the Quest. The Quest also holds tremendous sentimental value as my Dad helped me learn about cars under the hood of this one. I hadn't met my Dad until I was 15, and this was the bond that let me know who he was. The SL, OTOH, was what brought me to 3Si where I made my closest friends (Jeff, Steve, Nessa, Vira) and many others that I consider good friends. The car, though originally only to be a good looking daily driver, has grown on me and become yet another facet of who I am.

So I come to you, the BAWC, to get some outside opinions. I need some help deciding whether I should continue putting money in to the SL or move on to what I feel will be a much more fun project.

Save them both. IMO I know no help at all from me. However, you know my stance on the blue one already. I will prob be the only one who does say if it comes down to it save the blue though. :D Just size up which one overall would be the cheapest most reliable one to keep imo I guess. Logic..from me what the..

Ultimately I know the Quest will be more reliable. I won't break that trans or diff, and with 350-400hp in a RWD, 3200lb car, it should be plenty fast. It's also so much more rewarding to do big smokey burnouts and donuts. :D

After mentioning the bond with your dad, keep the Conquest.
That's my opinion.

The bond with friends isn't hurt or enhanced by a car, imo. They'll still be the same friends with or without the SL.

The bond with a parent that comes from a hobby you both enjoy..I don't think there's much that can compare. Not to say you'd be any less close if you sold the Conquest, but..well..
bah..i can't explain it. If I had to choose given those circumstances, I'd stick with the Conquest (if keeping both is absolutely 110% impossible)

edit: oops! I misread the poll..I thought it was "which stays"..oops.

Tough choice J. I believe your car was the first I saw where the hoop actually looked alright. Of course, the Volks make the car look very nice. (even tho you need to lower it shhh) ;)

I feel you leaning heavily towards the Conquest, and rightfully so. Like Aaron mentioned, that bond with your father who you met late in life is pretty damn special. As sad as it is to say, you must release the GT.

The issues keeping me from having both:

This requires me to have room for 3 cars. The Conquest is in storage at my Grandma's house. When I take it out, it won't go back. Therefore, I have to have a plan on where to store it while working on it and also a place for when it's drivable.

cash: Technically, this one isn't as bad as the place to have it as I can build it slowly over the course of a year and still get it done. If I sold the SL, though, I would have the capital up front to buy everything I need and have a couple thousand left over for paint and restoration. I also don't want to think of what my insurance would go up to. :scared:

If I could find a way to harbor 3 cars in my garage/driveway, I would do my best to build the Quest and save the SL. I've grown too attached to these damned cars.

If you hug your car before you go to bed like I do I understand. My car is the only constant thing in my life *swoon* I mean..

I was teasing or am I? Check how much it would be for insurance first? I did for my Mustang GT Needless to say mine is cheaper then when I had my Pontiac Grand Am! :D

More 3000GT's can come later, lose yours for now

..but a non-stock motor in that RWD Conquest, and your 1st car!, thats very special.
I'm building mine and think you should keep yours.

It's harder to come by a good clean conquest then a good clean SL. Parts are pretty easy to get for the SL to do whatever you want... not so much so for the conquest. If you are going through with the 6G72 swap, then you have a better parts selection and more reliable engine (imho). I say keep the conquest and ditch the SL if you think that you can realistically tackle the conquest project.

The conquest is to you what the Stealth is to me, so I'd keep the one that matters more in that regards (I don't plan on ever selling my Stealth). Also you might want to think about which would will be harder to sell, which I'm assuming is probably gonna be the conquest in its current form.

On the other hand you have a lot of neat crap on the 3000 I'd hate to see go, also losing a FWD-TT in the area will sadden me.

The Conquest has history, even if no one cares or remembers them. It was Mitsubishis first real race car, and the first sports car to come over here and actually be competitive for Mitsu. Of course it'd be better if it was a Starion and not a 'quest in that regard, but no big deal.

The SL is nothing special at all. It's special to you, but in reality, it's just a low model bargain car that is worthless today. Still looks pretty cool, but soon it'll be dated and then you'll have 10 years at least before people think it's "cool in that 90s sorta way" like people do with some 80s cars. Dump that thing, you can always get one later...plus FWD really sucks!

If you sell the SL, what are you going to daily drive? It doesn't sounds like the conquest would be ideal for DDing after all of the mods you have planned.
If you sell the SL, what are you going to daily drive? It doesn't sounds like the conquest would be ideal for DDing after all of the mods you have planned.
I have an SVT Focus for daily driving. I bought it a little over a year ago after the last time my SL trans broke. Since turboing it in '04, I've only managed 25K on the car. This last year I didn't even make it through one oil change before the differential shit itself. So I have a reliable daily driver. The 'Quest would only come out on nice days. The thing was a handful with the stock motor, so putting something torquey like a TD04 6G in it should make it go sideways very easily.

Thanks for the responses so far. You guys have helped ease my mind on this. It's still going to be hard on me to sell the SL, but I really think the Quest once done will be a much more fun car to drive.

Jagd - I've already switched out the Quest lights for Starion ones. :D They look so much better. I never got to drive the car with them installed. :(
