so my dads car needs help

my dad has a 2003 v6 camero. the body and inside are in really good shape. the problem is the mechanic yesterday claims the engine isn't pushing the oil in well enough and it soon will burn the engine out. one option he was given was a $1700 valve job and the second option was doing engine R&R for somewhere near 4k.
so my question to all of you that know more about cars than I do.
how much can an engine replacement or valve job cost? I would hate to see this car hit the yard since the rest of it is in such great condition.

oops.. ok so its a 2000.. sorry about the typo.
the engine I guess is not pushing the oil through by the cranks or something like that so now the engine makes a ratteling sound or so I have been told. I can ask tomorrow for the write up the mechanic gave my dad.
I'm sorry, i don't know shit about cars.

Valves have nothing to do with moving oil around the engine...sounds like the mechanic is trying to take you guys for a ride.
If there is a problem with oil circulation then oil pump would ahve to be bad or some sort of clogged section near a squirter or the oil pickup or something simiarl...but really nothing to do with the valves.

if its making a rattling noise theres many things that could be causing it. lack of oil pressure is likely whats causing it. now the cause of the low oil pressure is likely due to lack of maitenance or low oil oer time causing wear. this mechanic should have done an oil pressure test.
