The best kind of Taco Bell is the kind you get from Mom's Mazda6.

Post by Monochrome »

So saturday night, I just finished installing the motor into Stephs car, I'm riding home in the 98, and get an inkling for tacos. I'm exhausted from fighting the headers all day and didn't feel like cooking. It had been a while since I enjoyed a Steak Bowl, so Taco Bell sounded good at that moment.

Drive all the way out, get my food, Greg is happy. As I'm coming out the drive thru, a silver Mazda 6 with some dual exhaust and rims accelerates out of a parking spot and right out in front of me. Fortunately, my reflexes are good and I avoid rear ending the 17 year old by about 3-4 feet. He goes tearing off only to wait at the light. I pull up next to him, and glance over at the pimple faced prime example of why insurance companies charge ass loads for newbs behind the wheel. In return, I get a snooty smirk and a rev.

It was then, I started shaking in my boots as this lowly mazda was about to pw0n my pitiful overweight completely stock & underpowered AWD dirty pig. Light turns green, 2 seconds go by, and the mighty one wheel wonder takes off like a fat kid chasing a brownie. In utter shock, I completely forgot we were racing and casually took off in 1st gear. Slowly accelerated into second, then punched it.

By 3rd gear, I was already passing the flounderous potential of darwinism and proceeded to put several bus lengths between us.

Unfortunately, I was caught by the next light and had to slow for the non-existent cross traffic and proceeded to wait 3 minutes for the light to decided there's no one coming and I could proceed.

In that time, Moms Mazda happened to catch up to me. This time, the 120 lb light weight wanted to talk.

"Hey, is that a twin turbo?"
"Yeah," I reply.
"Wanna run?"
"For how much?"

It was then when it hit the poor bastard that it would be a good idea to put $50 down for this race. I didn't have $50 on me, but for some reason I decided to entertain his offer.

Light turns red for the opposing lane and the turning lane lights turn green. Again, no traffic has yet pass us by or turn so we sit and wait some more.

I look over at the kid, and he's reaching into the back seat. At the time, I couldn't tell what he was doing, but he had the rear trunk seats down and seemed to be fiddling with something. It came clear about 4 seconds later when I saw the Nitrous purge venting onto the windshield and pizza face again smirked at me and reved his mighty SOHC V6 ferociously.

Couldn't help but look at the kid with one eye brow raised wondering, "Who the fuck puts NOS on a Mazda 6?" The kid probably had $5 grand in useless crap on that car...

At any rate, the turn lane light finally turns yellow just in time for a car in the opposing lane to pull up and wait. I tach it up to about 5K (normally I launch much much more aggressively, but the car has the stock clutch with 92K and most definately can not handle the way I launch).

Light turns green and not 1/2 a second later I'm gone. In fact, I'm so gone, the mighty silver surfer has yet to move even after I get clear thru the innersection. I don't think the kid even made it thru that intersection until I shifted into 2nd. By the top of second, the kid is bus lengths behind me and has no chance of catching up so I let off...

Kid pulls up next to me and says with a sad face, "Hey man... uhh... I don't have any $$..."

Now, if this where some place like say, North Carolina, you challenged a race for $$, lost, and couldn't pay, you don't stop and admit you don't have the $$. Your ass is high tailing it the fuck out of there because the dude you just lost to is packen something under the seat that you don't want to get even a glimpse at.

...but no, this is a much more civilized place and I'm not hard up for cash, so I reply, "How many tacos do you have?"
"What?"
"Tacos! How many do you have and are they hardshell?"
"Are you serious?"
"Yes, I want your tacos."
"Hey man, no problem! Here you go."

Kid handed me 7 hardshell tacos, busts a u-turn, and heads straight back to taco bell.

Me, I drive home happy and eat heartily. :)
