How much $ to build a new vr4/tt?

Post by SeanVr4 »

this may be stupid but i was just wondering how do the dealers get their prices for parts....if i were to add up every part on a vr4 would the cost equal what they were brand new back in the day with obviously an increased price per part nowadays bc of building costs, shipping due to increased gas prices blah blah?

just a stupid question but i wanted to know what ppl thought

Chances are, if you were to buy every single part for a VR-4 from the parts department at Mitsubishi then you would more than likely pay more than what it cost to buy a new one on the showroom floor. Dealers will typically charge you list price for parts which is the maximum they are allowed to charge for the part and is part of the reason things are so expensive from the dealer as it cost them much less than that to even make it so it is all pure profit. None the less, many of the parts are hard to come by and will generally be back ordered for a long period of time so it could take years to build yourself a "brand new" VR-4. Another dumb question, if you could build yourself a VR-4 by just buying the parts then what would the VIN be? Eitherway, I find it interesting and would be neat to build one but I think it would cost you more than buying one when they were new.

what..they can't ship a uni-body? :D

Not to mention you couldn't get a new transmissions anymore (not a 6-speed getrag). They're all remanned units now.

That could get expensive fast.
engine 2500
tranny 2600
TC 1200

Thats with out the tires, wheels, shafts, ECU, shocks, seats, doors, glass, heads, injectors, cams, cam gears, oil pump, water pump, timing belt, timing tensioner, alt, starter, all those brackets and pullys, radiator, intercoolers, intercooler pipes, mas, turbos, headers, gaskets, and no telling what little odd and ends.

when a car is built, the parts are bought/manufactured in lots of thousands, which will bring the unit price way down. Our replacement parts are made in much smaller amounts, and have a higher unit price. This doesn't take into consideration the costs of shipping, storing, etc that also have to play a factor that the original supplier during production didn't have to worry about as much.

You would pay much, much more to buy the parts than it would cost to have bought the car itself.

No, but each piece of the unibody has a part number, so theoretically you could build one.

Yes. Even if you find a dealer who would sell you the stuff below cost, you'd still pay much more than the cost of a brand new VR4. And that's assuming you can do all the assembly work yourself.

Honestly, you'd be better off buying a good condition used car, and just reconditioning it to like new.

Just because there were only a couple hundred 99 VR4's, that does not mean that there weren't a couple thousand of those chassis built and used in other countries at the same time. Remember the NAO market was the only market to get the z11a chassis, and everyone else had the z16a and z15a which were used across multiple vehicles.

Your thread got me thinking.

It would be a blast to get a run down VR4 and strip it to nothing and completely build it up. Powdercoating the unibody (sans rear quarter panels) etc. Just build a beautiful car from the ground up. Doing all your mapped out mods at that time so they are best integrated.

That would just be an awesome project. Maybe in the future I will do that with a Z16a chassis and swap over all my goodies from my Z11a. Damn pipe dreams! Now I'm going have to actually do this years down the road.

Yeah, I dream of doing something like that. Strip everything to the metal, seam weld and reinforce the chassis. Add better sealants and sound deadening.

Nissan did something like that with the Skyline GT-R Z-Tune models. The amount of hand labor that went into those was spectacular.
