As much as I love the stuff, right now I wish they made a super quick drying RTV.

I'm working on my car today (woohoo parts finally came in) and since I am replacing the radiator there is no better time for me to pull the front turbo and fix the leaky oil return line.

Only problem is, I've been kicking ass all day and in the groove of working and now I'm stuck with nothing to do for an hour because I want to let it set prior to fully tightening it up. (yes, I'm doing it the anal way because I do not want to have pull the turbo off again unless it is to put a bigger one on)

Anyways, I thought I'd make a thread to bitch.

you WANT to tighten it up before it cures. also i hope youre using grey RTV. anything less is uncivilized.

Put parts together with RTV silicone, finger tight for 30 mins, then fully tighten.

I have always put it on what i needed, finger tighten it, let it dry until its not longer tacky, then tighten all the way, and not cut off excess.

My new radiator came in yesterday. So today, I was able to work on my car.



Time to get started.



First up was to pull the old radiator and messed up fans.

Also, my front oil return line has been seeping oil for a while now. Since I have to pull the turbo to fix this, no better time than now.



I forgot how much you have to take apart to get that damn turbo out.



Everything it RTV'ed and drying overnight. There are no real good working on car lights out in the garage so I closed up shop before it started to get dark. I'm also rewiring my WBO2 gauge, a new fan controller is going in, fixing my knock sensor, and installing ground wires. Basically doing everything that is left on my to do list.

She will be back on the road tomorrow evening.

The steps forward.

Ground wires installed.
New radiator installed.
WBO2 spliced and re ran
New fan controller installed.
car completely put back together. (with exception of radiator brackets, those are on their way)
She started up and ran just fine, the fans kick on at temp and when the AC is on.
As of now the front turbo return line is not leaking.

WBO2 is still not reading properly. grumble grumble

There were two plugs on the radiator. I didn't think to tighten them prior to installing them :d unce: so they leaked when I started the car up. I will have to go tomorrow to buy a huge alen wrench.

I'm still getting the blue smoke. I was lying to my self saying that it was from the leaking return line seeping into the exhaust and burning off.
SO, It is either excessive blow by, which I have blow by but I doubt this much. A bad turbo, or a need to replace my VSS. Of coarse it has to be the one part of my engine that I didn't replace.

check your PVC valve. Did you ever clean out your intercoolers when you tt'ed your car?

Did you rebuild your engine with 9:1, but just use old heads so no VSS replacement? Miles on the heads?

Grrr I was gonna say wire the edges of the radiator to those bolts and drive the thing!, but it looks like still more issues, dang you'll get it soon man.

PVC is only ~2000 miles old. There is some decent blow by though.

I'll be driving her tomorrow once I get an alan wrench to tighten those drain holes. I was able to finger tighten them to where they were no longer leaking. But there is no way I'll trust that on the road.

I did use my old heads but I had a full rebuild on them, resurfacing, full disassembly, washing, checking. I'm looking at my bill and there is no charge for new valve stem seals. But then again this was a year ago so I don't remember if they mentioned replacing them or not. I'd like to think that they did.

I also wouldn't put it past being a bad turbo. I bought the pair from Walek for ~$300. Having them be bad would not surprise me.

Either way I'm burning some oil and making the nice blue smoke. luckily it is not horrible, just noticeable.

I'd be 98% sure ANY machine shop would replace valve stem seals with new if they rebuilt the heads with full disassembly. Is there a "head set" or any other engine gasket sets shown on the receipt, because the VSS would have been with that stuff.

Especially if they had ANY shaft play at all, I'm betting that smoke is turbo(s).

J, let me know if you find it a bitch to install the stock brackets as well. Mine sat in there nicely but it was a bitch to get the brackets in place. Basically the stock radiator is curved at the front which also seems to be a relief for the wiring harness running along the front. The koyo is not curved at the bottom and thus takes some persuading to get the bolts started for the brackets. Start each bolt just barely or you wont get them all in.

I looked over my bill, I'm more than certain they did. I was just hoping for the least expensive of the problems.

Well she is back on the road.

I just tied in the radiator for now, heck that thing is so wide it isn't going anywhere anyways. She drove and sounded great. No noticeable smoke while out driving.

I did however take a video of the smoke. This is after the car was sitting for ~15 minuets idling, with no engine revs prior to the one in the video.

Let me know your opinions. As you can see, prior to reving the car there is next to no smoke.

Well, since I had the car put together I figured, where I could test it around town first, instead I took her on a almost 600 mile road trip.

She was solid!! I'm a happy guy.
