Well, I remembered why it's been so long since I've been to a motor show. My hip started giving way about 3 minutes in (as I'd walked maybe 15 minutes from the bus stop in the city) and then people just got in my f*cking way. So hard to get a somewhat clean shot without some jackass leaning in getting in my shot. Anyways, I pushed on. I was disappointed there weren't more sports cars to look at, as well as the hawtness. There wasn't much around, i promise you. I was even going to get some pics of some dudes for Moff and the ladies,but they were all off doing, well, whatever they were doing. Anyways,here are the pics. They are just from the digi camera. The flash wouldn't even go off for most of them, but I'm sure if you really wanted to see these in high res, there's a mag or two out there.

The STI looks much better in the blue/yellow rally trim, but I still don't love it.

Come to Detroit for the North American International Auto Show in January. On second though...don't. We like you too much.

Our Auto Show is held in a cave. It's lit by torches. It was originally carved out by dwarven miners. We pack close to 1 million people in there every year. Porsche finally got fed up and said they're not coming back in 2008. We're taking their space and filling it was 5 Chinese shitbox builders.

I'll still go just because it's a 20 minute drive from home and GM is unveiling the 2009 Corvette ZR1 there. But I'm thinking I'm also going to drive to Chicago this year and see how a world class city holds a proper auto show in a world class facility for a change.

I've never been to NAIS, but I've done the Geneva auto show. That absolutely kicked ass! I believe it is one of the largest shows in Europe (I thought it was 1 or 2, with Paris being a close rival). Definitely impressive.

I've been to Chicago's Auto Show as well as Detroit's, and let me just say that Chicago >>> Detroit. The Chicago Auto Show is held at McCormick Place, which is about twice the size of Cobo Hall, yet they still have approx. the same amount of cars, so there is a ton more room. The last time I went to Chicago the displays weren't quite as elaborate as those in Detroit, but they weren't lacking either. If I had to choose between driving 2.5 hours to Detroit or Chicago for the auto show, I would choose Chicago.

The prestige of the show is still there, more or less. Detroit is still the motor city, and despite their problems, 3 of the most significant auto manufacturers call this area home. There's a lot of product information that comes out of here in January.

The problem is Cobo Hall. The place is a dungeon. The city and county have been trying to assemble a plan to expand or replace the place for something like the last 10 years, but they just can't get their shit together. Too much political bickering on top of the other well known problems this area has been having.

It really is sad. Michigan in general is a nice place. Detroit used to be one of the hubs of America. There's so much potential to be great again, but there's just so much working against it
