I gave up

Post by TajMan »

Or rather, got to the point I thought my time would be better spent working making money [& paying shop] rather than CONTINUING to half-ass troubleshoot this damn Jeep truck I'm trying to get running
(no spark)

I towed Comanche to good little shop by me. I left note explaining everything that has been done. (head rebuilt, wiring harness changed, crank position sensor changed, etc.) I said if needed I had a new ignition coil I could get for free in Bountiful.

I got a call from shop today, they said they need the new ignition coil. I have it now, will give to them & know on monday. I will REALLY be kicking myself if all it needed was the damn ignition coil.

and if it doesnt need the coil that shop scares me.

testing the coil is pretty simple. power, switching ground, resistance on primary....

The damn crank position sensor finally got tested, bad, installed new sensor, it tested bad? too! that finally put things over the edge
This shop is a good little shop, and has even other Cherokees with that 4.0 I6 in their parking lot right now.

This is leading me to believe that the test (or the testing equipment) is bad. But I'm not logistician.

Those things can be a nightmare.

A few years back my bro bought a 89 Cherokee. It ran the day they test drove it. Few days later when he picked it up it wouldnt start.

We tested and did troubleshooting on everything. Put another ECU in, removed cat and catback, TPS, IAC, plugs/wires/rotor etc etc etc.

We finally gave up and sent it to a local shop that said it was the ECU. :wtf:

Lots of cussing and lots of headaches that thing was.

Yes I know. Semi-bad analog tester was used, then good new analog tester was used, then *#!@*^%$
Digital tester is ideal. At shop now is more productive.

You're spending all the time, money, headaches and hassle trying to troubleshoot and fix a broke....Jeep.

Get a 3/S, then you'll have an excuse for all that. We'll even sympathize with you...or most of us will. ;)

But once you get this thing figured out, it should run great. These motors and tranny's are great, but just like everything else, they need love and maintanence. At least Jeep parts a dirt cheap, unlike 3/S parts. That is why I love my Jeep.

Damnit all to hell I do give up!
Got the thing back, $70 to get spark, ran but ran poorly. Feels like its running on 5 sometimes even 4 cylinders.

I just did a compression check:
125 - 115 - 120 - 120 - 120 - 120

Plug in #1 I believe looked like it might have not been igniting and all others looked ok.

So with compression in all cyls, and with all new ignition components and spark working now, what can cause 1 cylinder not to run? I guess if just 1 fuel injector wasn't opening for fuel. Troubleshooting that now..

Besides that bad exhaust leak, bad brakes maybe 1 seized caliper, and engine/bottom end doesn't sound amazing anyway total engine failure may be imminent.

:( & so sad for 113K mile vehicle too.

(I don't need anything from sympathy-just sayin how it is, and I ask about real MJ problems on comancheclub.com of course)

Well if the motor is shot, you can pick up a used I-6 in good condition for about $300 or less.

What the hell did the previous owner do to it?

1 valve just hit piston for too long, then engine just sat for 2 years (intake/exhaust valve in 1 cylinder is gonna be open in one position) and that caused some rust/deterioration/whatever on that cylinder wall. (115psi compression)

All hope is not lost, possible bad spark plug..

Bad fuel injector

Bad things that makes from truck sitting 1.5 years (besides main head prob.):
-bad coil
-bad fuel injector
-bad brakes
-lower compression in 1 cylinder
-bad exhaust leak

and that doesn't count ALL the tuneup items I replaced already before it ran.

Junk yard fuel injector fixed that, running ok now on 6 cylinders. The bad exhaust leak makes the engine sound, not IDEAL, and plenty more to address, but drivable now..

add slight coolant leak to the problems, bad hose or bad water pump
