What should I do??

Post by Theo1 »

Im picking up a '93 stealth Es for free, and it needs some work:

Heres whats wrong with it:
Timing belt jumped?
Guy says there is only one bent valve
Clutch is shot
Interior is all apart due to an attempt to install an aftermarket stereo
Some little stuff.

The good:
Body is mint
Interior is in good shape, just appart
DOHC
only 75,000 miles!
Aftermarket wheels
New tires
Stick shift

Overall the car is in good shape. Just mechanically its pretty well F*cked.

Do you think i should:

A. Fix the car (Will have around $3k MAX to fix it)
B. Part the car out Use some parts for my car

How much do you think it will cost me to get this thing mechanically sound (assuming there arent any other problems) and will it be worth it?

Thanks

I pulled a head that jumped time and ALL the intakes were bent. Its a 50/50 chance. I would part it out but thats just me.

I was thinking about parting it, then realized it only has 75,000 on it, then realized its an ES lol. I could use a second car though, and have the money to fix it (so i think) I think if it goes over what im willing to spend, then ill part it. How much roughly do you think i would make parting it out?

I think if youwant to turn a profit, part it out.

An ES will not go for that much and will probably sit on the market for a while unless you just want to break even. You will however make money parting it out.

What I would do personally, pull the heads and see how they are. I think if it is not to bad and you have the money to fix her she would make a great DD.

I'd keep it for me to drive.

I'd pull the heads and regardless of how many valves are bent, I'd get them rebuilt. I use a machine shop in Salt Lake that has done head and shortblock rebuilds for me VERY cheap. (much cheaper than other shop I used to use)

Personally I'd convert the body to the 3000GT panels I'd like and re-paint. Who cares if its an ES - its a 3000GT base now.

SOHC's are the only cars that should be blown up. :D Ok maybe nice '97+ cars can be ok...

Ok, so how much am i looking at for heads and a clutch. Im not talking a race clutch or machined heads, just some stock parts. The guy thats going to fix it says i can buy the parts and he will put them in. Im going to buy a new clutch, but how much would some used heads run me?

Whatever you can find some used heads for..

Machine shop would charge me about $600 to rebuild those 6G72 heads, fix some bent valves, included "head set" gaskets.

If just clutch disk worn thin, you can get a new disk and TOB for less than $100 if you're trying to fix it cheap as possible.

I think im just going to get a whole new clutch. Im not looking to rig it, since it will be in the family a while. I havent been able to find any used heads for a DOHC N/a so far, ive only found ones for sohc and tt. Will ones out of a dohc diamante work?

The whole clutch "kit" just includes disk, pressure plate, TOB. You get flywheel surfaced at the same time. You can find a N/A DOHC clutch, use the right one. Dealer items will be more expensive, compare prices between three different parts stores and a "clutch specialist" shop you can find.
