no reason to replace them unless pitted on sealing surfaces either due to road salt (at that point just scrap the entire car) or lack of coolant maintenance.

The only other concern with a stock water pump is the bearing, but that's really a concern on any timing belt driven water pump.
I mean its nice he's making things like this, and it's rebuildable too. Since the OE are out of production now it's nice to have the option if needed.

This makes me want to do dumb shit. Imagine if you could 3d scan the stock housing and make a drop in electric replacement. Not necessarily for the 3s but being able to do stuff like that would be cool. Never considered scanning a mating surface like that. I mean scanning a gasket and extruding would be easier if you only need the mating surface, but still, in this application you’d be able to keep the same flow characteristics of the coolant channels.

Well when I did my main build I got an oem pump. But about 4yrs later it froze on me and pushed my timing belt off. Just barely caught it. I ended up buying an aftermarket one after that. Well 2yrs ago when I went to brg it just wasn’t staying cool. I want to redo my whole system. Flush everything I can. Clean out everything. And thinking this as well.

Its cool to have there when you might need it, but its otherwise a luxury item. Stock is perfectly fine.

They don’t make stock anymore.

I know. My stock housing works just fine and can be reused.

I don’t have a factory one anymore and my cooling was not doing what it use to. Was just thinking it would be good to do. While cleaning everything.

I am curious on what you think about this. You deal with all this way more. I do wish I could make a test rig and put a couple 3/s water pumps in it and test flow. It wouldn’t be too hard. Plastic side. Bolt to it. Fill with water. Put a pitot gauge on it. We flow test hydrants all the time. Just would need to know what rpm’s these things turn in our engines and build a pulley system with an adjustable electric motor. Test flow rates at different rpm’s.
It prob will not flow anymore. It’s just tighter clearances. It hopefully will last where a lot of these water pumps out there will not. Heck I had one go bad on me and almost took out my engine. Shredded half my timing belt when it froze up.

Wow...$1,000 later....
I know aftermarket water pumps are dicey, but arent there still decent ones at a great price? What pump does Gates use in their kits?
