The Grand Sport. Part 1: The Shift Debacle

Today was the day. They didn't give me much notice. The driver called me while my wake up alarm was going off this morning. So I didn't bother making arrangements to go somewhere else. It was pure dumb luck that I was working at home today. It all worked out.

It was nerve wracking getting it off the truck. They had a stack of wood to get it over the ramps. The driver was telling me it took them over an hour to load it up in CA. They managed it though. The only damage to the splitter looks to be from driveway scrapes. I've had enough problems with that on the Stingray, so I'm not surprised. I don't know how people lower these and still drive them.

Quick recap on the specs

2017 Corvette Grand Sport Collector's Edition
CE mainly gets you the Tension Blue interior, fender hashes, and the unique VIN sequence. Everything else was just a bundle of trim options that were available on any other Corvette. The Tension Blue interior didn't become a general option until the C8.
Mine is number 876 of 935. It was supposed to be 1000, but GM didn't build them all for some reason. The last car is actually 940, because they didn't build 246-250 either. So it's at least got an interesting story and some actual unique options compared to most 'special editions'.

Differences between a GS and Stingray are the wider wheels and body, and bigger brakes. Pretty much everything else is the same, including the engine.
Mine has the Z07 package, which is the track suspension and giant carbon ceramic brakes. The Z07 package also includes Pilot Sport Cup 2 semi-slicks, but the previous owner swapped them out for the standard Pilot Sport tires. I didn't want the Cup tires anyway, so that's good. He just bought a whole set of wheels and tires, because these wheels are from a 2018 Carbon 65 edition. They have the polished lip instead of being all black.

Mine also has Z06 clear taillights instead of red, clear LED sidemarkers, and an unknown short shifter. It also has exposed carbon ground effects. The spoiler is still painted though. I might swap that out for a carbon one later.

I've been chasing one of these for roughly two years. There were only 53 built with the options I wanted. Coupe + manual + competition seats. So finding the right car at the right price at the right time took a while.

Overall it looks good, other than being filthy. I haven't done a detailed inspection because I had to work this morning. I can say whoever installed the PPF on the front was a hack. There's all sorts of bubbles in it. I may just trash it. The center console has some sort of BS hydro dip faux carbon on it, so that's going to have to go before too long. The blackout stickers on the rear reflectors will need to go too. I'll probably take those and the Shift decals off this evening.

The only real bad news thus far is I can't actually drive it. Shift didn't send the temp tag. There was also a mix up with the registration paperwork that they still need to sort out. I think the worst of the stress is over, but we're not quite finished just yet.

The white car will be up for sale by the weekend. I already took the exhaust off, and I need to swap back to my original roof. I'm keeping the carbon roof for this car, even though it's the wrong color. I may just get the sides wrapped in the short term.

The rest of this afternoon is going to drag.

I'm gonna get in touch with the account rep after I finish lunch.

The wheels are the same diameter as what's on the Stingray. They're just a lot wider.

19x8.5 front, 20x10 rear vs 19x10 front and 20x12 rear. The GS has 335/25ZR20s in the back. Same as the Z06 and ZR1.

I think it's the offset and the flared fenders that make them look bigger.

Let's see how much I like them when it comes time to replace them. :d oh:

Did anyone notice the airbag labels are already gone from the visors? I didn't even see it until I went and sat in the car just now. They did about as good a job as could be expected with that material.

I did not notice the missing labels. That's a happy bonus!

Yeah tires are expensive...Those rears are monsters.

Still can't decide how I feel about the blue. Lol.

Other than that I love it. The grand sport in that grayish color has always been nice.

Aa long as you are happy with it that's all that matters!

The blue is very polarizing. Even Vira said she liked my red and black over white combo better. I think that's part of the reason they didn't do the full run of 1000 cars. I love it though. It's the primary reason I held out for this specific car rather than just getting a standard Grand Sport. It would have been cheaper and a lot easier to do that.

It's not a very popular option on the C8 either. Most of the cars that have it have either light or dark blue exterior too.

The more pics I look at the more I can't decide how I feel about it. I like it, but also don't.

I like the blue. I would worry about the cloth blue fading.

Everything blue is leather. I'm more concerned about dirt than fading.

I just went back through your Focus thread. You never posted a single interior photo.

I'm guessing this is what yours looks like?

I'd say the two colors are pretty similar.

That's a Euro interior. I honestly don't know if I have an interior shots of my car

Here is a stock photo of what mine looks like though.
