Talk me out of a Subaru

Debating still on picking up a cheap used Subaru, preferably outback for the interior room, to use primarily for camping/hiking. Want Subaru since there are a ton out here, can lift it cheaply, comfortable, etc. Would be spending no more than a couple grand. Wife and I really want to go more and the Kia doesn't have the ground clearance and the truck is too big for the roads I'd want to go down.

Talk me out of buying one or give me a reasonable replacement. No jeeps.

Yup J…Subaru is the first thing that comes to mind when I think 4wd, lifted, ground clearance, and off-road capable for several thousand $. :/

Problem with jeep is that only one I've ever had that is comfortable enough for a few hour drive was my grand. No way I'd buy one again as it was so incredibly unreliable. Worst vehicle I've owned. Xj is too small and wrangler too expensive. Plus jeeps go for a hefty premium.

So no jeeps. Period. I will never own a jeep or Chrysler /fiat again.

So besides subaru, what is there?

Sounds like you talked yourself into a subaru already.

Or do I use the money I'd spend on the Subaru to modify the truck to be good enough to use on the forest roads and just deal with minor cosmetic damages?

Smart. I've been saying this for years but without the "again" part.

...I thought one of the arguments you made for buying a truck was (in addition to comfortable for you etc) to be able to do these things?

I bought the wrong tires for it.... So either way looking at easy $1000+

A thousand dollar Subaru needs another $3-4k to make it run and reliable.

This is correct. I’ve never seen a cheap subi that didn’t need head gaskets or a rebuild. That’s just how they are man.

The more I have though about it I am going to do tires and a small leveling kit for the truck .

Your truck can’t go where a subi goes without a level kit?

I would have to lift the subi as well. Truck could probably make it as is but not with the tires on it now. For $150 I can put a leveling kit and get bigger tires for ground clearance

And it's more about width and size than ground clearance. Talking very narrow and tight winding roads.
