Copypasta from my facebook because im tired of hearing about it and tired of people drawing the wrong conclusion from this.

I see the jackstand thing being shared, and a lot of people talking shit about harbor freight. While their tools arent the highest quality, its important to note that ANY brand ratcheting jack stand can fail if you knock the handle. There is a tiny roll pin that is designed to shear if the handle is lifted with a load on it, but in testing you can lift the handle enough to disengage the pawl without the pin shearing. If you want safe stands, get some with a pin. Either the tripod style with the set pin or the ratcheting type with the added pin. Avoid getting under the car unless its stable, throw a wheel under it for added security, and never get under your car with just a jack supporting it. Its a dumb and easily preventable way to die.

This is the kind i use currently.

I’ve always been taught to put the handle away from where your working so you can’t knock it. I also release the pressure from the jack but leave the jack under the vehicle as well and if I’m using a tire it goes under the rail as well.

My understanding was that it’s from rocking the vehicle it could fall not from hitting the handle though.

Several points of contact Every time. I leave the jack under as well when I get under the vehicle. I’ve had a car fall on me before.

Double checked my stands this AM. Turns out I dont have the recall version after all. Ive got two sets of the aluminum 3 ton stands, so i must be safe.
