The Definitive Truck Thread

Doing this to keep all truck related thoughts and questions in one thread. If any of you want to ask questions about trucks or buying them or whatever, this is the thread to do it.

Oh, and Frode - SHUT UP.

As you all know, I personally am going to be buying a truck this year, especially since I can't trust the Jeep. Job and student loans will determine how much truck I buy, but I want a definitive list of what trucks at what price point I should be looking at or avoiding as I am hoping to be purchasing one in the next few months.

Some considerations that are important to me.

Must have 4x4, be reliable, and full size. Prefer 6.5 bed with smaller cab, but won't pass up a great deal on a crew cab with 5.5 bed.

I have owned and liked 2 Chevy 1500s. One was a 96 and the other a 99. I also owned a 01 Ram 1500 that I would not buy again. I have driven and spent many hours in a 2006 F250, and 2012 and 2013 F150s. I have never been in nor drove a Tundra or Titan. I have driven and spent a few hours in an older Colorado and although I fit, I would much prefer going full size.

I debated on looking at full size SUVs as well, but if I am spending the money, I am getting a truck. End of story.

As it stands right now I am leaning towards a F150, but would not pass up a great deal and on well maintained GM 1500 or Tundra, however the Tundras really hold their value up here so all seem overpriced.

That said, here is my first question.

Based on prices, what years of what trucks should I consider?

$0-10k
$10k-15k
$15k-20K
$20k-25k

Anything over $25k I would be looking at new because at that point the 0 for 72 is better than having APR on used.

Depending on job and everything, I could probably pay cash up to $15k and not worry. Then use the remainder of savings to fix it up, supplement income for a bit, pay on student loans, etc.

Seems like Ford F-150's are cheap up you way. 2011 and newer are solid trucks with the 5.0 being the least complicated and easier to maintain.

I would throw 2009 and newer Rams in there as well with the 5.7 and MDS, but there is a chance the one you find might have issues. Lifter cam failures do exist and most all will need new exhaust manifolds or exhaust studs at some point in their life.

Been applying to lots of jobs lately, but most have been pretty far out of town so will really need to buy something kind of quick should I land a job. Some have been temp but other permanent. Up to about 60 miles or so one way, so need something reliable and comfortable for sure and able to handle all kind of weather as some are also up and over the mountains.

That said, this is what I am thinking. Let me know if you think these are what I should be looking at or not?

$0-10k - Any year Tundra, 2003 and older F150, Late 90s early 00s (GMT800) Chevy/GMC 1500
$10-15k - 05+ Tundra
$15-20k - High mileage 2011+ F150 (talking 100k+)
$20-25k - 2011+ F150 with under 100k on it

Honest opinions, should I look at the GMT900 at all, even with great service records, or should I just avoid it?

Anything else? Titan worth a look?

Is there a mileage limit I should keep my search under? 200k miles?

I really like it. Cover and all. I honestly think you should get it and move on with your life. I’ve enjoyed not looking for a truck every day all day.

I have a buddy with a Titan, nothing but problems. Paint issues, and rear axle grenading were the latest. Even had the fancy aluminum cover recall put on it. Still failed.
