Small, "boxy", and awd?

So the Mrs. keeps talking about just giving up her Kia in May and buying something cheaper. The residual value is going to be about $13k on the car and she would rather buy something cheaper and awd.

I told her the kia with good tires would be just fine if not better than an older awd car but she insists on awd for the peace of mind it brings.

She loves how the soul drives, its size, maneuverability, reliability, etc. She also really likes "boxy" things. Before the soul she drove the XJ.

She does not want the XJ back. So looks like I'll be driving it for awhile. With no modern tech, no abs, nothing power, etc., she just doesn't want it and wants something newer and safer.

So what is out there, that is small, boxy, modern, safe, and awd, that can be had for under $10k? Anything?

Ya know. I love my Ford Escape. It’s not as boxy as she prob wants but the 2.0 (and make sure you get the 2.0 if you do as the 1.5/1.6’s blow a lot of head gaskets and the fix is a new engine) is a blast to drive, Awd, modern, safe, and I bought mine for a little over 10k over a year ago.

After that I would prob suggest something like a subi after someone fixed their head gaskets. Run forever, best awd in the game, safe....

There's not a lot of modernish boxy looking cars. The boxiest looking one I could feel comfortable recommending is a older Ford Flex. Otherwise the newer Sportage is a bit funky looking and AWD.

She hates the Ford Flex. Tried to get her into one before the Kia, and she hated it.

The list she came up with last night on vehicles she might compromise the boxy for are:

Honda Element
Ford Edge
Honda CR-V
Hyundai Kona
VW Tiguan
Kia Sportage
Honda HR-V
Toyota Rav4

I know some of those won't be in her price range, and the VW is not a reliable one.

Guess time to start doing research on those.

That's what I was thinking. Harder to come by, but I think it might fit her needs more than some others.

Kia Sportage and Ford Escape are same class. Take her to drive the 2.0 and step on it. She will like it, oh yes, she will like if.

Yeah, I would fix this first...not fair to you to have you drive the Jeep when she doesn't want to, and not want to sell it because it's hers.

No point in selling because it doesn't cost us anything.

I also don't mind driving it. I've always liked XJs. I actually prefer driving it compared to the Volt.

That being said I have no problem driving it until I get a job. Then we can look at getting a truck for myself.

Right now we are looking at saving money though. So I'm driving the jeep, and when her lease is up in May she will need something else to drive. I can't find a truck I'd like to get under 10k. There are plenty of cars under 10k she would drive.
