Well this was news to me 3/s related

Post by DCIV »

Saw on Facebook this morning someone putting in a C5 front structure member that he modified into a 3/s. Then others posted up that they were too?!

Did I miss something? Why would this be something to do?

Is that to replace the rear subframe? I guess that might make sense if you want to change the track and run wider tires for some reason. Then you are into custom axles, etc as well. Seems like a lot of work to "fix" something that really isn't broken, but I don't know what they are trying to do with it. I'd hope it is on an 8-second 1/4 mile car or something to drop all that subframe weight way down.

It does have to do with wider tires somehow. Some good pics.

Some of the pictures show it as the front subframe being replaced and going to a double wishbone setup for suspension...

It looks like they are more or less using the C5 subframes and making them work on a 3/S body. Why not just buy a C5...

Edit: What Jeff beat me to say by 1 minute

Indeed.

Anyone actually going out racing on a regular basis with a 3S at this point probably should have their head examined.

I mean, I love 3S cars as much as anybody, but it is getting very difficult to get parts now. Yeah, you can get parted-out stuff, but the quality there is extremely variable. And there are so many better platforms now to start with, that if you actually want to race - there's essentially zero reason to do it with a 3S.

Case in point - my 4th gear is grindy now, and I think I must've broken the carbon synchro somehow. Can't find 4th gears laying around, so I picked up a used 6-speed trans for parts. Not sure how long I want to be doing things like that.

It did come with what looks like a new 300M output shaft though. Not bad for $1100 as long as the rest inside is okay.

I probably should sell the whole car and all my spare parts soon. Hmm. No idea what to ask for the car, and now I have to fix that 4th gear issue first.

You better not sell that car!

Also so why are they doing this swap? A different suspension? Lighter? Someone help me here.

Looks like the front is dual wishbone which is a much better setup than a McPherson strut setup.

Exhibit B: Erron Spalsbury
Exhibit C: Dan Dillon

Not sure if anyone races them anymore except for the guy who LS swapped his.

Been debating this for a bit now too. I still love my Stealth, but I don’t drive it much, and parts are very hard to find. My 2nd gear is grindy at high RPMs. I have stock friction rings and 2 spare transmissions, so I hope I can cobble enough together to fix it.

I’ve had this thought of selling it when I have the RS paid off and getting a used GT350 at that point. But then another part says I’ve had the Stealth for 14(!) years now and I’d have serious sellers remorse if I got rid of it. Also I could probably only get $10k, maybe $12k for it.

I probably should just fix the trans, finish the Brembo conversion, relocate my amp, add the powered sub I want to do (where the spare tire is), and add a receiver with CarPlay.

If you could get 10k for it...sell it. I’ve not seen anything but pure stocks, low miles go for that sort of money. I know yours is in great shape but just haven’t seen it. Hans can prob give us a better answer.

With everything I've done to it, I should be able to get that no problem. Might take a while, but I should be able to. That would be including all the spare parts I have for it as well.

If I could get $30,000 out of the Spyder, I'd probably have to do that. Might be a bit of a stretch, but someone would end up with a VERY nice Spyder that needs nothing.
