I want to build a kit cobra.

Post by DCIV »

My dad and I have talked about building one for years. It’s mainly been talk though. I’m tired of talk. I wanna build one. No car meet up in East Tennessee I can pull up in my vr4 and get any respect. They will not even talk to you. I want a rear wheel drive, king of the wheel burn outs, come at me bro, vehicle.

If you don’t know my dads a baller. He is a sales man for press stuff. He makes 10% commission on HUGE shit. As none of you know (as I haven’t said it) he will end up dead of copd. He has smoked two packs a day from 14-50 some before he quit. You can’t even tell he has copd right now but I have run enough copd calls that it sucks. It will be horrible for me to watch. As all kids my dad is my hero, all these crazy ideas I have here, he can make them possible. Random AC compressor alignment...he made the brackets. Tons of other stuff through out my life he is like “sure, let’s do it”.

So here is my plan.

I have a vr4 that I don’t need or really want. Sell it. My contribution. He has a Mini Cooper that he wants to get rid of. His contribution. Obviously he would foot the bill for the rear but I would have to move my vrR outside under a cover and build it at my place.

Trouble...my mom. But I think if posed right, as a father/son build that she would be good with it. This is a full summer plan. Plant the idea, hassle them about it....and make it happen.

Anyone have any suggestions? Thoughts?

Sorry to hear about your dad but this should be a super fun project. I was looking into building one as well. Superformance was a little out of my range so I looked at factory five which is an exceptional kit.

I’ve put the idea on the shelf for now though. As you know with a kid having time is sparse. It also didn’t help finding complete kit cars here for for sale in the $30k range. Almost want to buy a complete one and do my minor modifications.

Either way I’m subscribed. This should be a lot of solid bonding time with your father.

I don’t know if it will happen. I just want it to and going to be a goal of mine to make happen. Kits seem to be more expensive now. Use to be like 14k and now 20k with no add ons. I also thought they were aluminum bodies. But seems they arnt?

Most all are fiberglass bodies. Superformance is as close as you can get to authentic. Pretty sure they have aluminum body option.

Yeah most kits are glass. There are a few Shelby authorized kits that are aluminum.

I've always been enamored with the build process and the look of these, but the cost and some of the reviews of how they drive when completed have always put me off. If you do build it I look forward to living vicariously through you!

I don’t think they were ever up to today’s handling ability, they are just power to weight ratio monsters.

They look cool, they are cool, they are trackable, and everyone will think you are cool.

Its the cool choice.

There are a couple in town. They are not, not comfy, and impractical. All things that describes a great coop idea.

Suppose to say “hot” instead of “not”

But it’s true.

Txt from my dad “Mom appears to be open to starting the Cobra project. Just didn’t want to commit too much $ per year to it”

So I believe this will happen. But it’s gonna be 8 months of planning at least.

Lol. This gets better. I said we need to look at different than factory five as we want an aluminum body. He replies

“I agree. Also would like to find an 80’s or newer Shelby as the donor” he means 2000’s aka the series 1.

This might get real fun.
