The Starquest. Is this Unicorn plausible?

Post by ChargerX3 »

I'm not sure you all know, but I have a soft spot for these cars. Mitsubishi Starions or Chrysler Conquests. They made them all through the 80's but not until the late 80's did they offer widebodies. 88-89 would be my ideal year as they had the most updates and improvements. The problem is that they are really hard to find and especially in somewhat decent condition. I swear every hood rat finds one, modifies it with spraypaint, stickers, and ebay parts, then thinks its worth $8k or more.

I've seen guys build up the stock block, go 4G, even an LS swap. All of which sound awesome. If i were to build one my momentum with 6g's says go tt and use a Kia/Hyundai RWD trans, but I dont know. A turbo 4G would be lighter and could really put out.

I'm nuts for dreaming aren't I?

My buddy was thinking about dropping a 4g in his but I'm pretty sure he's gonna go with a 2j after looking into what's needed for the 4g swap.

What was so difficult about the 4G?

No you aren't they are awesome! I had an 87 Starion as my first car, and I'd have another one right now if I could legally dump the craptastic TBI fuel injection system. My Miata is a decent means to an end for a fun/cheap track/autox car, but I don't love it the same way I love Starions :bliss:

I never knew! Any insight on the car as a whole? Sounds like Fuel Injection sucked. I've only ever seen one in person from the outside and really dont know what im walking into performance, fit & finish, aesthetics, comfort wise.

Here you go. Already has a V8 in it, and it's not a heap.

I think they're cool, but there are more interesting cars out there.
I think about all the things we could have done, all the miracles we could have achieved, if we were all just a little bit better than it turns out we are.

Better than most. Not going to buy a red or black car though. Would need to be FI like an LS too.

Finding the transmission or the correct block for the existing trans.

He's not the type to piece together stuff that he knows nothing about. He's a Supra guy.

I get it. I’ve seen one guy with a 1jz already. Looked good.

It’s a popular swap like LS so I get the hooning. I guess I’m just stupid and like to do things the hard and unconventional way.

And once again here is my buddy's Quest

Was out at the shop last night and we BSed about it a little. He put bigger tires on it last year and ended up having tire rub issues. He put larger tubs on it and is shortening the rearend another inch. He did get his 7 second pass last season. Hoping to drop a few more tenths with fixing the tire rub and some other small suspension issues.

He's been through a bunch of different ones. I believe he started with a TH700 back in the day, then ran a Powerglide for awhile and is currently running a badass 5 speed set up with a ratchet shifter.

I had an old Starion... Cool car, but the stock motor is shit. 4G swap it.

I would love one with a 4g. Something in the 400hp but quick reving. Would be a blast.

That's pretty much how my buddy's started. Now he makes north of 1300 up to the wheels.
