A 04ish Subaru Forester or a 2012ish Ford Escape? Both comparable miles or price. But which one would be more reliable to 200k?

subaru will need head gaskets at some point (if they've not been done already). I was under the impression that the turbo models had the three layer gaskets where the non-turbo had the single layer gaskets and that was one of the causes of failure...I don't know how true that is however. Also I've read a little about ring lands or something breaking on the turbo models. Is that an issue with the car, or modifications made to the car...who knows.

Probably the escape, depends on which engine in the Forester.

Steve..been looking at a lot of escapes, but when looking at reliability some people have had transmission issues. Do you know if that was a certain year? Model? What sucks is when they do a review you don’t know which options the car that had the problems.

Ford had a lot of issues with the ptu for the AWD setup they use on a lot of their FWD based AWD cars like the escape and explorer. It's usually mitigated by more frequent fluid changes.

This. Change fluids on the regular and make damn sure all tires are same.

I haven't seen much on the escape but the Taurus and similar I've seen quite a bit. I don't know if the escape is using the same parts now.

Had a friend with an escape for work. Was pretty reliable. Subi might have head gaskets changed sooner. Both seem good enough.

Better yet, what you really want is...

Drove the escape 2.0. Honestly really liked it. Drove much like a car and so much faster than my crv. The average miles per gal in the Escapes computer didn’t match what I had hoped.

Computer readouts are never accurate. My g37 says 19.7 I've been getting about 18. Explorer says 15 I get about 14.5

I meant to add I couldn’t even drive the one I went there for because it has a national recall that when put in park it doesn’t always go in park causing it to roll.

So the vice principal at the wife’s school has a 2015 outback that he never uses anymore. Has like 40k miles on it. Wants blue book on it which is 19k. Way more than what I want to spent. But because the wife found it she’s all like, we can spent that much. Lol. So I have to go look at the thing today. It’s the bottom of the line. The top had like lane assist and the car monitoring. Not this one. Plus the color was stupid.

I just told him it was too much for what we are looking at. But I’m looking in the 13k ish hoping to talk them down and sell/trade the crv to be at 10k. She acted like that was too much till she found something. Lol. Women.

We love our 2016 Outback Premium. Slow as balls because we we were not interested in spending $37k on a 3.6R with Eyesight. The plus side is we average 27ish mpg.

Yes. I looked all that up. Great vehicle. Would run forever too. But I don’t wanna spend 19k.

I want something fun to daily drive. I doubt I’m gonna find it.

I still say find yourself a 6 cylinder Outback in your price range, they are typically good for over 250k

I’m guessing the 6 has worse gas mileage and costs even more.

Yes their gas mileage isn't as good as the NA 4 cylinder, but comparable to the turbo EJ25 you said you wanted earlier. Depending on the year and miles they are a little more expensive but usually worth it.
