I know this may seem weird to some people, but I have been keeping track of how much fuel I have consumed for my car since the begining of this year. This also shows how many miles (very close figure) I have travelled in the same time as well. I can also determine how much crude I have consumed (give or take a few gallons).

and the resulting figures based on the log are (as of last recorded refuel in August):

total miles driven : 8713 miles
total gallons of fuel used : 457.04 gallons
total barrels of crude used (based on http://www.fueleconomy.gov of 42 gallons/barrel) : 10.88 barrels
Estimated annual petroleum consumption in barrels of crude for 2006 Acura TL 5AT (http://www.fueleconomy.gov) - 16.3 barrels/year
Outstanding difference - 5.42 barrels

total CO2 the car has emitted (based on this information of 20 pounds of CO2 per gallon of gasoline) : 9140.8 pounds or 4.57 tons of CO2

total average $ spent per month on fuel alone (based on this information)
Jan - $127.83 @ 2.77/gal
Feb - $155.78 @ 2.86/gal
Mar - $190.15 @ 3.26/gal
Apr - $198.24 @ 3.50/gal
May - $233.14 @ 3.64/gal
Jun - $230.82 @ 3.49/gal
Jul - $198.56 @ 3.33/gal
Aug - $160.56 @ 3.11/gal

Total since Aug 07 - $1495.08
Estimated annual fuel cost of 2006 Acura TL 5AT (http://www.fueleconomy.gov) - $2142
Outstanding difference - $646.92

EDIT *just a note though - the daily price per gallon locally in my area is genrally cheaper than what the national average is for Los Angeles. So the above figures for price/gallon isnt entirely accurate.

like Ive said, its all based on the information I have. and i was bored enough to crunch in the numbers.

personally i wouldnt like ethanol in the car. but if it's in there, and i dont notice it, then good the http://www.fueleconomy.gov site doesnt inidcate their numbers have ethanol factored into it, so for now, im not concerned

Oh lord I don't even want to know. I've probably driven 20K miles this year, 15 or so of those in my 11mpg Tahoe, and about 1500 miles towing the VR-4 getting 9mpg

i dont want ethanol in my gasoline either.

i fill up at costco for that reason. i also flat out refuse to get fuel in oregon because of that. when hawaii went to mandatory E10 i lost 4mpg in my lincoln.

the oil battery I was working at in my previous job shipped almost 100 cubic metres of oil per day ( just over 6 barrels per cube) for the 6 months I worked there this year (nevermind the 5 years before that). I'm way ahead

I think I'm doing pretty good. I only use my car maybe once or twice a week to go to the grocery store or the package store. I walk to school and walk downtown and that's about all I do. I think I drive about 7-8k miles a year on average right now which is pretty good I'd say.

That's actually pretty cool Macky. I wish I was dedicated enough to figure that all out....although I'm probably better off not knowing

I drive easily 1,000 miles a month, if not around 1,200-1,400. The Jeep doesn't get all that great of gas mileage either. Average around 16.5 city/highway. School is a 25 mile round trip (to the park and ride anyway....the bus ride is another 17 miles or so) and work is almost 45 miles round trip. Do that M-F and then all the other driving in between that and it adds up fast.

lol i hear ya. we'll be moving soon, and the distance from our place now to the new place is about 22 miles. my mom's work (i drop her to and from every day) is about 4-5 miles away. my work is about 12 miles from our current place. if we move, I will have to travel roughly 28~30 miles in the morning to drop my mom off, and travel another 15~16 to my work. in all, Im looking at at least 50 miles a day round trip for the rest of my life. thank god Im not driving the Evo anymore!

but with regard to this log, I found that its just more convenient and cheaper to refuel while its halfway - if you noticed the numbers, even though the price per gallon went up (april through july), the amount spent per month actually started dropping down after the price per gallon peaked while gaining more miles per gallon/dollar. to wit:

april - $198.24 @ 3.50/gal - 1013.5 miles
may - $233.14 @ 3.64/gal - 1307.6 miles
june - $230.82 @ 3.49/gal - 1309.3 miles
july - $198.56 @ 3.33/gal - 1088.4 miles

I spent the most money (based on the national average for premium fuel) in May, but didnt spend as much in june to get a few more miles. With regard to april, I spent about the same (about 25c difference) in July but travelled about 75 more miles.

I always go to this one gas station approximately a mile from where i live so that helps with consistency i guess. the new place will have a shell station just down the street so i should be able to repeat everything next year.

funny how that works.
