My first CEL

Post by vegasidol »

It IS pouring... 4/4... I lose.

94 VR4.

Just replaced the harmonic balancer. Billy (thestealth) is coming out tomorrow to help adjust my belts (squealing). I don't know if he has a logger...but if he doesn't, how do I check my CEL without? I've picked up a bit about using a multimeter.

Yay.

I don't have a logger, sorry.

I don't think you can pull codes with an analog volt meter on anything except the 1st gens...but I could be wrong.

I'll give you a shout when I'm heading your way.

Factory service manual...

Section 14 (Multiport fuel injection - On-vehicle troubleshooting)

Page 14 - Check engine/Malfunction indicator lamp (Definition of codes)

Page 23 - How to diagnose by blinking codes through check engine light (attach pin 1 of diagnostic connector to ground)
I think about all the things we could have done, all the miracles we could have achieved, if we were all just a little bit better than it turns out we are.

I'm assuming Vira has the manual..?

Obviously I should bring my jumper wires...

Does it take an ignition sequence to trigger the self-diag.?

We got the belt issue squared away...is it just me, or do these cars require everything to be "just right" when setting belt tension so the don't squeak?

We got the code read...something is amiss with the EGR system. Vira said she has noticed and extra whooshing sound when under boost lately. Bad EGR solenoid, vacuum leak? The wiring appeared to be fine.

I wouldn't be surprised if the CE lights is for the crank angle sensor because one of the wires got cut when the pulley came off.

Why would the code be 4 long and 3 short flashes (indicating EGR) if there was an issue with the crank sensor?

I was speaking of vegas's car.

The EGR code get tripped when the EGR temp sensor reads above 212F degrees. This is why when guys do an EGR delete to a hybrid car, leaving the temp sensor plugged in rarely trips the code.

That IS my car, Greg.

Billy is my new (local) hero. :D He adjusted my belts...still a slight squeak...came back a lot the next day again...gone today. :p

Though, you may be right about it being a temp sensitive reading. The CEL was on for 3 days. Was gone driving home today.

Your original equipment pulleys are definitely due for a change.

I missed the "We got the code read.." part...

Amazing how your eye skim past important details like that.

Well anyway, that's where it comes from. The ECU only checks the EGR temp when you hold the rpms between 1900 and 2300 rpms for a period of time (think it's 5 minutes). So, if you keep the RPMS above or below that, you'll never see a CE light.
