hardwires headlights question

After work today I'm going to hardwire the headlights on a 70 satellite to an external switch because the main switch and harness melted.
my question is this.
can I just run a power wire from the battery, construct my circuit, install my new switch and ground to the body?
also do you think 14guage wire will be sufficient?

Do you think you should fuse it just in case? Not sure the kind of power those lights draw.
Just something I would think about before doing it.

You are going to use the stock relay right? It should be fine, and 14 ga wire should be stout enough.

actually I wasn't. I'm going to create a seperate ciruit that is switched and fused.
I'm going to run a wire from the battery positive to a fuse to a switch. then from the switch to both positive headlamp leads. and then individually ground each headlamp to the chassis.
