Crazy project car idea I'm tossing around

Post by Jeff V. »

It seems there's always a special place in your heart for your first car. I've had this wild idea lately. I think it'd be fun :)

This is an AMC Eagle SX/4. It's basically a Jeep chassis with selectable RWD/AWD, and a 4.2L I6.

I'd get one of these, strip out the existing engine and trans, and install this along with the appropriate transmission:

GM LL8 4.2L DOHC I6. 291hp. And there are some great packages out there for programming the factory GM engine control computers. Which brings me to this:

Boost the bastard :D

I'd leave the body stock and put some obnoxious truck tires on it.

What do you guys think?
I think about all the things we could have done, all the miracles we could have achieved, if we were all just a little bit better than it turns out we are.

Chrysler doesn't make a modern I6 that has a good aftermarket tuning package.

My old one was silver with blue side skirts and a healthy dose of surface rust. I needed tires, so we took the rubber off my dad's GMC Sierra since he needed new ones anyway :D

It was so obnoxious. If I had had 1/2 the skills back then that I have now, I'd have swapped out the transmission when it died and I'd have kept it.

Well, if you need any help with the amc/eagle cars, SkortchGT's dad wrote a book about early AMC vehicles and has 3 or 4 AMC's at his house right now with a bunch of spare parts.

Oh, and I have no want to ever buy another one of my first cars haha. A 1990 Chevy Corsica isn't meant for anything else but a people transporter.

I took drivers ed in a 96 Neon. It's a fond memory, but I have no desire to ever own one

Hmm. Sell the Stealth and start another lunatic project, or sell the Stealth and save up for a Corvette?

I would go with C... both your options start with "Sell the Stealth" one of them shouldnt.

Looks like a fun build. Especially with something that is so uncommon.

You already know my opinion. If I have to choose between my SL and the Conquest, my SL is out the door. When your first car is a fun one, it definitely holds something special that is hard to get rid of.

If you're talking about the 3.5L/3.8L thing, that was more of a mental exercise.

I dunno. I keep going back and forth. I like the Stealth, but after 7 years I need to do something different. I really want a Corvette, but I'm starting to wonder if it's something I could really enjoy at my current income level.

Doing an insane project like this would be cheap enough, and could be fun and different.

I dunno. I probably won't end up doing it. But it's fun to think about :)

They haven't found a way to charge you for dreams yet ;)

You're gonna have a hard time finding that 69 Demon since they didn't make them till '71. ;)

Did you mean a 69 Dart?

Cool idea, but stealth > AMC. The project would be fun, but not worth selling your stealth.

Corvette ;)

What income level do you need to enjoy the 'vette? Once you own it, maintenance/mods/repairs are similar to the Stealth...except parts are much cheaper. You can get factory GM performance clutch kits from the Z06 for $135, '04 Z06 struts for <$300, etc.

I want a C5. I figure I need to be making about 5k more than I am now to comfortably afford a payment on a 99-00 model. I could sell the R/T and save up for the next couple years, but I'm not sure if I want to be without a "fun" car that long.

On the other hand, I've only driven my R/T about a dozen times this year, and I'm not really missing it all that much. :sigh:

Yeah, if you're making payments on it, then it's best to amke sure you're comfortable.

Go for a '99 FRC and toss on the '04 Z06 shocks and a few other mods and you'll really enjoy it. Can be had for reasonable price these days too

I can't stand the look of the rear of the FRC. If I get one, it'll be a targa.
