3.5L 6g74 swap info

alright...please dont tell me to search 3si bc i have read up on various threads as well as John's site.....but i have heard mixed opinions on this

my questions are this:
-what year does the shorty need to come from and what car
-besides the shorty what parts need to be used from the 6g74 to make it work (i know the lower intake manis from our cars dont work and i think the water housing)
-are the cranks forged in those shortys?
-what modifications need to be performed in order for this swap to work

basically i got thinking....for the hell of it, i called one junkyard up the street and they had a 3.5L longblock....i live in a city where there are tons of junkyards....and i can find 3s's in them...why wouldnt i be able to find the right shorty....im just curious on what ppls opinions are on this swap and why dont a lot of ppl do it?

If you want to do it as painless as possible, start with a dohc 3.5 block. In the US it only came in the 94-96 montero SR

Any other 3.5 block is going to require 10x as much custom fabbing

The montero motors are a PITA to use. Get a Pajero long block. Please don't just buy the short block. You are going to screw yourself on some items that you really need (PS pump bracket, thermostat housing, lower intake manifold, etc). The cranks are forged. Beware that bearings for the cranks are a bit pricey (almost $200 for a full set). I believe Ross may be the only company making pistons for that engine right now.

I doubt mitsu made 2 castings for a dohc 6g74.

I still dont see how the actual blocks would be different, but i can see how the FWD accessories would be nice to have

Well, it's a completely different crank for one and the stock 3L one already comes close to hitting the walls. If the piston is going to stroke father inside the same block, the crank is going to reach that much closer to the walls therefore you'd need to shrink the rods some.

Not to mention the changes in the tolerances from having the crank reach out father meaning something else would need to get reinforced to make up for it.

...or are you just saying why couldn't a guy just get a 3.5 crank, pistons, and rods and just machine the 3.0 block?

*note: This post is merely speculation. I've never torn into a 3.5.

Im saying i dont see why there would be a difference between a dohc 3.5 montero and dohc 3.5 pajero short block. That would require 2 different very expensive castings and tooling to create basically the same part. I do see how the accesories and brackets would be completly different

I know a sohc 3.5 is completly useless for this conversion as the block casting is completly different from its dohc counterpart.

You want the pajero motor for the accessories. Lots of brackets, thermostat housing, etc are different that you are going to need to do the swap.... and you can't just go to a US mitsu dealer and order those parts as far as I know. We're doing a built 3.5L right now (waiting on Pauter to finish making the rods) so I know which parts are the same and which need to be a fwd 3.5L engine part.

^only reason why i am looking into this is i can find anything when it comes to good old philadelphia....lots of junkyards...shit if i can find a 2g vr4 laying in a yard thats a needle in a haystack.....i called up one yard i know and found a full 3.5L 94-96 already....

how come a lot of the jdm websites say that the Jspec na awd 3s's have a 3.5L engine?

i found a longblock that says its from a 3000gt and is 3.5L and comes with the awd auto trans

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the TD05 3.0 manifolds won't fit due to the heads sticking father out. Once again, I've never done it, but I would assume...
