Srrrrsly.

Redline 10w30 in the engine and Royal Purple Max Gear 75w90 in the gearbox has made my S2k sooooooo happy. Revs even faster than it used to, has a bit more torque, shifts are liquid-smooth and most of the gear chatter is simply gone.

Even after nine solid hours of driving - both city and highway miles - the car is still as smooth and steady as it was when it first warmed up.

Car is so happy that the back end broke loose several times today. :D

Got better MPG as well. It's amazing how using quality oils can make a machine run the way it's supposed to.

Thanks for the help in changing the oil Steve. This car has never been happier. Now I just need to change out the rear diff fluid. Bought a 23mm wrench, and already had a 24mm socket. Of course you've got my drain pan, so we'll have to figure something out. :D

I know how that feels for sure. About a month ago I changed the tranny, transfer case, and differential fluid in my Jeep. It had 85K when I changed it, and appearently the previous owner never changed them. The diff. oil came out a VERY thick and VERY smelly black goop. The transmission fluid was a nice deep brown. I put all new high quality fluid in, and now I get better MPG, it shifts ALOT smoother, has better torque, and the ride quality is alot better too.

That and I put high end hub/bearing assemblies, u-joints, new battery, and belts. :D

But that fluid change worked wonders for the XJ.

Oh noes! Teh rear-end will be all greasy and loose! My poor car!

Heh, my Jeep got 12mpg, period. City, highway, no difference. 12mpg. 4L I6 + super short gears = consistency!

I miss having my Jeep around. Very few vehicles out there can take the abuse I threw at it without breaking down. I only changed the oil once in 9 months, and that was with the cheapest dino oil around (bonus: had to run it a quart low at all times because it leaked from the valve cover). Never got around to changing the tranny fluid, even though the transfer case leaked pretty badly from the rear yoke. (lift kit issues) Damn thing just didn't care. Ran great all the time.

New Jeeps aren't as stout from what I've heard. This one had over 200,000 on the clock but ran like it was new. I should get another 80's Cherokee...

I have a 98 with the auto tranny. As long as I do regular maintenance that thing will last me another 100k+. I am going to be lifting it and putting on alot of extras within the next year or so hopefully. I get about 23-25mpg freeway right now, and about 15-18 city with the 4.0 I-6.

I had an '87. ATX with some sort of gear swap or something (guy was kinda cagey about explaining what he had done). Just to go highway speeds (70mph) I'd have to be at redline. Thing was a BEAST on the low-end though. Could pull anything.

It was the gearing that killed my highway mileage. I simply ran out of gears by 50mph.

what size tires?

most likely 4.56s or higher.

I was going to run 31's with 4.10s, but after reading alot on JeepForum.com, almost everyone who gets the 4.10s wishes they would have got the 4.56s. I heard at highway speeds you are around 2500 rpm or lower I think. I kinda forget whay they said.

So if I were to guess, I would say your 87 had higher gears.

Oh yeah, tires were pretty damn big. Don't remember off the top of my head what wheel size.

Big enough to screw with the speedo and make it read about 7mph low at 50mph (actual).

Good quality M&S tires though. Put them to the test the very first day. Actually, on the way home. The very moment I bought the truck was the moment the blizzard hit a few years back. By the time I left the guy's driveway, there was already inch-thick ice on the road - and this had been a warm, sunny day!

with 7mph off, I would have to say probably 32's.

You're probably very close. It's hard to remember exactly, but I think those tires damn-near came to my hips.

But on the bright side, they weren't those mudder baloons.

Yeah, I want to get another late-80's Cherokee now. Something that isn't pretty but gets the job done. Take it out into the woods during hunting season. Those fiberglass body panels sure could take a beating.

Mine sure as hell does not look pretty anymore. I ripped off those stupid black trim pieces on the doors and took off the fender flares. I also hit some ice and put a nice big dent in my rear hatch/panel by the passenger side rear window. I have a bent wheel and the inside it pretty stained up and has some tears in it.

It is definitely my DD / off-road rig.

Come to think of it, I dont think there is a panel w/o a dent or scratch on it. But it still runs like it only has 50k on it, not 90k. It will last to 200k if I have my way with it.

I posted a to-do list in the to-do thread too.

It also has one new tire with big tread, and 3 almost bald ones with raised white lettering.
