i didnt put a new one on, i was debating but didnt want to spend the money. It was a cheap one though, and i tensioned it too tight.

That's a tensile break, and is a direct result of over tensioning the belt.

Yeah, also because a used belt should be tensioned less than a new belt as well, so it was probably severely over tensioned.

How'd you over tension the belt? It's just a spring and then tighten the bolt holding the pulley in place.

It would have been just fine had been not put extra tension on the belt... Hell I'm putting my 5k old timing belt back on, but I am not putting any extra pressure on it than the spring does.
