Mine's got a clutch type LSD in it right now. But that's going to go away if I can make the 3.5L, disc brake rear axle work. That's a whole other discussion of how I screwed up. I potentially wasted a lot of money and a lot of physical labor pulling that thing, and it may not work because it relies on being paired with a high pinion front diff (which I also have) that probably won't fit.
If I can somehow make it all work, it'll be getting a hybrid viscous/torsen LSD out of a Montero Sport.
I kind of had this idea about installing a Super Select transfer case from a Montero, which would enable 2WD, AWD, and 4x4 high and low ranges. But finding one hanging off the back of a manual transmission is highly unlikely. They're also huge. So we're back to the 'making it fit' thing that I'm not very good at.

Jeff are you saying the stuff you have right now will not work? Is that why you are down? Or is this something smaller like the intake that you are frustrated with?

The intake, the multiple attempts at the motor mount, the exhaust, the front diff, issues with the rear axle, the two different versions of the wiring harness I've got in mind... I'm in way over my head, but I've got enough money tied up in all of it that I can't just scrap it and start over.
I was hoping to have it running again by the end of November, but at this rate I'll be lucky to have it ready by January. Even without screwing with the axles.
I should have just done a 3.5L with a 3.0 disc axle and called it done. But nooo....
In other news, Southbend has a clutch that'll take 300 ft-lbs. $600. Not terrible, but not money I'm ready to spend right now.

Different exhaust manifolds, different intake manifold, different wiring, different radiator, and the firewall thing.
He took a very functional approach that worked. I tried to be fancy.

Okay.....surely you can't be hung up on that small of issue. Thats a quick trip to pull a part or eBay.....If still not then go to an exhaust place, they will make all of it work. I am sure you can get the wiring correct and the firewall stuff. I just think you hit a little road block and are taking this all at once instead of one at a time.

Just put the radiator in the bed

Maybe I can make a giant roof duct going into the bed like some kind of redneck Le Mans prototype.

Can't you just change the guts of the diffs out to make it what you want?

I decided I "had" to have the bigger 3.5L axle, and at the time I wanted a locker so it was nice to find one locally. Because the 3.5L axle is physically larger than the 3.0L, I need to use 3.5L gears and diff assemblies. I'm going to have to figure out a way to get the parking brake working, as well as modify the companion flange.Aaron wrote:Can't you just change the guts of the diffs out to make it what you want?
There is no 3.5L 4.22 gear option, so that's why I have to change the front diff. All the compatible front diffs are high pinion, which means it'll probably hit my clutch slave cylinder, and maybe some other stuff.
I could solve the slave cylinder issue by finding a Montero Sport bell housing, but those are basically unobtainable. There's still no guarantee it'll clear everything else in the front of the truck.
Had I thought through the locker thing properly (IE realizing it was a stupid idea to begin with), I could have just gone with a 3.0L disc axle and swapped my LSD into that, and left the front diff alone. Then my only problem would be the parking brake.

could you not go with a 3/s parking brake set up then?

That's what the Montero Sport has. Discs with an inner drum. The issue will be the cables, not the brake itself.

gotcha, I mean.....some people dont even use a parking brake and could be added later.

How else do I prevent my truck from rolling away when parked? Putting it in gear didn't do shit.

ummmmm R if you point down hill and 1st if you are up hill.....works for every vehicle I have. My vr4 parking brake has been shit for years and I just dont adjust it because I know.

I just told you I tried that. This may come as a shock, but KC is very hilly. Putting it in gear AND having one wheel brake that was sort of engaging still wasn't enough.
I had to drive it to a client's site once, and I had to parallel park it at a weird angle so the rear tires were up against the curb so it wouldn't roll away.

Huh. Odd. Tn is pretty hilly and never had that issue.
I'm sure you can figure it out. What about one of the new electric brakes?
