I'll tell you my dad kept his 84 Ford Club wagon until... 2006 I think. He rolled it over once or twice, the odo.

So of course you can, every spring he would spend a few weekends fixing the rust; when it got too cold, it may or may not start because the carburetor was kinda funky. But you can keep a vehicle a long time if you want to, I just don't understand the reasoning personally. They're utility/wear items, I mean I drove 40k miles over 3 years with my last edge.

Maybe 6-7 years would be the limit for me, but by then newer cooler technologies would be on cars. To me, cars nowadays have such generational leaps in terms of cool shit on them, especially wrt to ACC and lane keep I would want to at least stay generational with them or be left behind.

Our old 92 Explorer had 220k on it when we donated it. The only reason we did was because it was in Boston and my sister's family was moving back to CA. I seriously considered having it shipped to me, but I knew I could get one here for less than the cost of shipping.

Okay let’s make a list. If vehicles are only half way done with their life whose driven a vehicle to 250k....minus the one person here who is a paid mechanic.

I got close 223k when I crashed my crv.

I’m willing to bed no one here has cracked the 300k. Why? We are all pretty mechanically inclined. We are all pretty stubborn. Because they arnt freaking reliable!

My dad drove an old Mazda 323 that he sold with 300k to someone at their church and it went another 100k, before they sold it. Had the original clutch in it even. No major maintenance required.

I had close to 300k km on my old Camry before we gave it back to the original owner. Last I heard he was at 500k km (over 300k miles) and still going strong (that was a few years ago though). All original stuff other than regular maintenance (fluids, brakes, joints, etc). But I don't keep cars long enough to put high mileage. I tend to unload them by around 150k when they are older ones. Not reliability reasons, but because I like newer stuff. If I could find something older that I was comfortable in that worked well for what I need I would keep it for over 250k easily. Just that needs and times change and as a result, my needs in cars change.

Only 2 vehicles I ever unloaded because of reliability issues. The Grand Cherokee and the LJ. Debating on unloading the XJ too. Was very reliable up until this past year. Probably more of a neglect on my part and using auto store parts as replacements. In the last couple years it went from maintenance to higher end stuff. Be we have had it for 12 years now.

Why would we get rid of a car that is reliable and paid off? They arnt worth hardly anything at this point......hmmmmm because something would be more reliable.

Our last 5 cars had right around 200k when we got rid of them.
92RT 195k, nephew wrecked sent to junkyard, regular maintenance and wear items only.

92 RT/TT 235k, sold because I wasn't driving it any longer. Mostly wear items and regular maintenance.

98 Sebring Convertible, 195k, sold as it wasn't being used after the purchase of our Venza. Wear items and regular maintenance. It did have a heater core issue where I'd have to blow out the core every couple of years because it would quit heating properly.

02 Outback 220k, head gasket issues (knew that going in). Sold it because of those issues and the lack of power.

02 Outback LLBean, 190k, wear items and regular maintenance. Still my daily driver/weekend cabin car.

Other than the first outback, none of the cars listed had transmission or engine issues or ever left us stranded. Could they have went further, yes, as they were maintained properly. They were sold because they had outlived their usefulness to us.

You realize not one person is backing you? Could that be because you're wrong?

Someone doesn't have to be a paid mechanic to make a car last. Just because we can make a car last doesn't mean we don't grow tired of having the same car. I've already mentioned cars within my own family over 300k miles and still running good. No one in my family is a paid mechanic.

I don't know why you have such a bitchy attitude about a little comment about this thing having plenty of life left.

Coop to answer your question Ive had several reach the 200-300K mile club. My problem now is that I have a work vehicle and too many cars to even put enough miles on them.

92 VR4- Over 280K miles on it when sold. Only things replaced were the original rear turbo and trans. Trans only failed because the kid boiled all the fluid out of it while trying to spend all weekend drifting it. Ran fine when i sold it.

98 Cherokee- Think its just shy of 200k now. All stock and good with few parts changes. I did put a lift on it though.

90 Corolla- Drove it over 200k miles

89 Montero- 289K miles. I dont know its history yet, but it appears to be original except for some possible engine work. Appears somone dropped several washers down the intake at some point.

91 Ram 50- 195k miles. All original

Now my parents have several over 200k. 95 Caravan, 11 Caravan, several 90's F250 Diesels. etc. The trucks are over 300k.

I plan to keep the Ram 1500 for a long time, so Ill keep you posted as their pedigree appears to be strong.

I’m not bitchy, just being realistic. 200k reliable. Some to 300k....no one here has come close to 500k to even know if they are reliable.

Exactly! I’m sure you will keep it that long and even 250k which I bet it will be reliable. I just don’t buy the 500k bull shit. Only stories people hear from others. It’s like back when you do something no one else does and want people to be impressed your not gonna say, shits falling apart but it’s 500k. No your gonna say, it’s 500k and I’ll drive it anywhere. Then somehow it becomes gospel.

It's because the VAST majority of people do not keep a car that long, because they get bored with it. The average person buys a new car every 3-4 years. So unless you are driving hundreds of thousands of miles a year, you won't get there.

Who only keeps a vehicle 3 years? I don’t know anyone except MI steve and maybe you. My dad puts stupid miles on for his work and keeps them more than 3 years. All the guys at work keep them more than 3. People I live around more than 3 years. Seriously think you pulled a coop statistic out of your butt and it’s wrong.
