Jeff...as even you have said this is a winter beater to get you through till the truck is done. What all are you going to tackle? Obviously you need to be safe but do you have a list?

Tires are taken care of.
Front brakes are in progress.
Still need to sort out the lighting, fuel gauge and muffler.
I need to check the timing belt, but I'm not super worried about it. The old 12 valve engine wasn't an interference design.
I should probably change the oil and get the trans flushed.

That's about it. The trim stuff certainly doesn't need to be done, but I've learned to jump on hard to get parts when I have the chance. It could help me re-sell it later on.

I will see what I can get together. The turns should be fine. There is no rust on this truck.

That reminds me. I found another Jeep cluster when I was at the junkyard getting my muffler. I almost bought it, but I figured I'd wait and see what happens with the one you're sending me.

Today's progress update. Got the correct pads at O'Reilly. The front brakes are reassembled. I just need to put the drums back on the rear and bleed it all.

I think I found one of the reasons it ran with an occasional miss. The mounting ear for the distributor was busted clean through. Someone tried to use a big washer to lock the whole thing in place, but that didn't work. The dizzy had a few degrees of rotational freedom, and a whole lot of vertical freedom. I was able to pull it out of the motor without removing the nut. Fortunately I've got the original from my pickup. I think I've got the dizzy from the red truck too.

The fuel gauge problem is looking like it might be the sender. The manual has a simple test involving a light bulb, and it worked. So it looks like the cluster and harness are both ok. Looks like getting a replacement will be easy.

This thing fits everything from 89 to 99. I verified it in ASA, so it's not just usual eBay bullshit. Hopefully I can get the old one out without too much hassle.

Now that’s just too easy. You should have an access panel underneath your rear cargo carpet. I saw a panel there when I was cleaning mine out. If so that’s much easier than what I had to do with the max.

Getting to that panel was one of the first things I did. My only concern now is the typical Mitsu fuel bulkhead corrosion and those stupid little nuts. I've got it soaking in PB Blaster.

I found the same part from a seller in Puerto Rico. It was about twice as much, but it'll get here in half the time.

How crucial is timing? Slow boat it otherwise. Or take a donor unit.

$15 vs $30. I can wait until late Oct or early Nov, or I can have it next week. That's a couple weeks of not having to guess how much fuel is in my tank. That is easily worth another $15 to me.

If I could find a donor unit, I'd do that. But full size Monteros are a rarity in the junkyards here.

Shit. Fuel gauge went out on my blazer. Every 200 miles I filled up. I wouldn’t even fix that shit.

Tonight I finished bleeding the brakes. Tomorrow I'll do the muffler and hopefully figure out the lights and horn. Then it should be ready for inspection.

I also unplugged that hideous, screechy key buzzer behind the cluster. I think I need to replace it with something like this.

If you can figure out how to make those I would jump on board!

I know the Monte and the trucks use the 2-pin buzzers. I'm pretty sure the 3S uses one too, albeit with a different shape and sound. Hmm
