For shits and giggles I priced out used 3.73 front and rear diffs for it. $720+ in parts alone. I suspect it would probably freak out the Traction/Stability control though.

Just checked ebay and saw $360 for the front and rear, I saw some others listed as the carrier only. I'm not actually going to do this it's crazy for what I thought I wanted this thing to do

I was going to say, re-gear it if you want the power back. That is what I had to do to the LJ. Went from 31" all terrains on light weight wheels to 33s on steelies so weight was major difference. Re-geared and it was fine. Then again I re-geared it for high performance at low speeds, so freeway mileage was worse than city driving.

I do not miss that thing one bit. Got tired of it letting me down. Maybe if I had an older one I would care, but that OPDA issue was too much for me. More than once it left me stranded.

For now I'm going to see what milage is like with the stock tires again. It's possible a chunk of the mpg drop was related my new commute. I may also throw in some new Oxygen sensors to see if they bring mileage back to the range I expect from it.

My passenger side exhaust manifold is leaking again so now both sides have the 'pftick' noise on cold start. I also need to see if I can get someone to properly diagnose the bad rear wheel bearing. The first shop I took it to said I had a bad rear differential and wanted to rebuild it. Ford 8.8's so rarely fail, and 02-10 Explorers are known to have wheel bearing failures I can't imagine the diff went before the bearings.

One thing to consider is the latter tires will show less miles. For instance the Jeep my brother used to have would only show .9 miles for every mile traveled. That adds up to, of course, 10 miles over 100 miles. When you would go a full tank it might only measure 300 miles, but you really went 330. That would change the gas mileage from, say, 16.5 to 15 over 20 gallons.

That is also true. Had to use a speedohealer in the jeep to make up for that as well. Don't have on in the XJ, but probably should.

Also, new tires almost always seem to lower mileage at first anyway.

I was only at a 3% difference so not outside the realm speedo error. I just ran the calculations and adjusted my last mpg using a correction for the 3% different distance. My MPG went from 14.45 to 14.80. Before under similar driving conditions I'd be getting 16.5 I basically lost 10% of my gas mileage.

I lost about 10% of my electric range when I put the new tires on the volt last year, but it slowly went back up. Not at the same it was before yet close enough, but overall a better tires so still super happy with them. Best tires I have had on a car (this does not include jeeps as they had specialty tires).

I have to admit, every time I open this thread I think "wow, I really like the blue".

Tread pattern plays a big difference in rolling resistance. Killed my work trucks mpg on same size tire.

Threw the other wheels and tires back on for better traction, then drove up to Baxster to fool around in the snow for a while this afternoon.

Fun. I’m in AZ until tomorrow. Wife says it’s coming down good and that the pass is Closed!

Yeah had fun today, when I was on 80 I could have made it all the way to Reno, it just would have taken a long time. I also had no reason to go all the way over the pass. According to the traffic cameras it's now snowing down below Applegate.

I like it when it snows like that.

Welp was rear-ended today on the way home in some traffic on the highway. Could have been a lot worse had he not swerved to the right.... all 3 of our cars have now been hit by no fault of our own in the last 12 months
