Hes not the only technician in here lol.

-7.3L Gas engine vs Diesel on economy- Diesel takes the lead by a fair margin Towing or not. Just have to keep your cowboy boot out of the Coal.
-No harder to work on a Diesel. If anything the engine has fewer parts, and is more simplistic. A turbo model Diesel would add a few more items to the complexity, but not much different than your VR4
-General parts are no more expensive than Gasoline counterparts. Likely less expensive like you saw mentioned above.
-Injectors are relative to the motor, age, and condition. Not much different than injectors on a car. In the early 7.3's they are easy to get to and change. Not every truck requires them changed either.

You couldn’t be just more butt hurt over me talking about vehicles and going 1 million miles but sure let’s talk about this.

Economy-if you need to tow...yeah get a diesel. If you want high mpg sure get a car diesel. Your right, diesel makes more power. But it cost more to use. Older vehicles you have to add fuel additive. Newer you have to start using def fluid. That adds a whole lot of complex to the “simple” engine. Your gonna have to have all that work out there in Cali. Have fun.

Yes they are harder to work on. Usually bigger bolts, higher torque numbers. Have a torque amplifier? I don’t. Have 2”
Sockets. I don’t. Have the huge impacts to turn that crap? Parts are heavier, bigger, just more pain in the ass. Period. Oh and dirty. Always sooooo much dirtier than gas.

Parts. Yes parts cost more. It’s simple, if a company needs X amount of money and the part last for X amount of time then it usually cost more the longer it lasts. Complicated aside as both gas and diesel could be complicated parts. Add in there are a lot more gas engines and now you are ordering and waiting longer for your parts. Less people make them as well. So yes, diesel parts are generally more expensive as they also have to hold up to more torque and towing than gas.

Go change an injector pump. Jesus I freaked when I saw how much it would have been in the Humvee. Add to that if any air is in the line get ready for a headache. And breaking those fuel lines loose yeah they arnt line a gas engine. Lol.

Seriously if you think they are easier go ask who makes more, a diesel mechanic or a gas mechanic. /end arguement.

1. We're not arguing about that.
2. Special tools. Bigger and heavier parts. Usually encrusted in nasty ass diesel oil buildup.
3. General parts... No. The stuff that makes it a diesel... Yes.
4. Early 7.3s don't have injectors. They have nozzles. Newer diesels have injectors, they're significantly more expensive and labor intensive to access and change.

General maintenance is more expensive. Not offset by fuel savings unless towing. All. The. Time.

Also... Most diesels have no room underhood. Everything is packed in as tight as possible. Anything older that actually has room nobody wants (7.3 dit and Cummins not included). Problem with a Cummins is it's bolted to a Dodge.

Dang, go off the deep end of the kiddie pool?

Over the life of a (similar sized) Diesel engine vs Gas you will spend less money keeping it running, get better MPG so long as you drive it like a sane man. Thats been my experience as well as most of others that I know. Yea, there can be some pricey parts at times, but you arent changing them all the time. Most of those parts have more miles on them than what you put on your gasoline car. Some never have to change them at all.

Dirt is relative. Diesels tend to live a harder life, so they may appear to be dirtier.

Injector pumps depend on the motor. Some have easy access. Go change an in tank fuel pump on a car with no access panels. Not fun either. Also you need to bleed diesel lines. There is a method which isnt hard.

Also its torque multiplier, but i dont see why you would need one.

I dont live in CA, like you dont live in Kentucky.

Take a breath and loosen up those Wranglers partner.

So how about a early 2000s 2500HD with the 6.0 gas guzzler?

Avoid?

see steve’s post. Almost exactly like mine. Lol. If it were that much better we all would be driving diesel right now...not like it’s a new technology or anything.

Yours are not the same.

Your logic of why we are not all driving Diesels is short sided. It is a better and more reliable technology. Its more efficient, produces more power, etc. Problem is its more expensive to build a diesel powertrain Vs. a similar gasoline upfront. Beefy engine blocks, internals, transmissions, axles, turbos are an added expense. Most Americans dont want to pay for that upfront cost especially since gas prices are lower.

Diesel fuel is more expensive. For every 42 gallons of crude oil that is processed at a refinery you get a separation of petroleum products that we use. According to https://www.eia.gov/energyexplained/ind ... ining#tab3 about 50% of the crude oil is separated into Gasoline. About 25-30% is made into various Diesel fuels and kerosene. The rest go elsewehere. Fact is, there is more gasoline to be yielded from crude oil and its easier and more cost effective to extract.

With that in mind it would make sense for automakers to cater to supply and demand. There is more gasoline to be had and at a lower production cost, so why not build cars that cater to this?

Gasoline has a lower BTU rating, meaning its not as efficient as Diesel. Gasoline only has 115,000 BTU/gallon while Diesel has 131,300 BTU/gallon. In addition to that the density of diesel fuel is somewhat higher than gasoline. In one gallon of diesel fuel you have more mass as well as more energy. Achieving greater thermal efficiency is Diesel's goal.

Diesel technology is better in every aspect except for initial upfront cost. Something budget strapped Americans struggle looking past.

Yeah....you didn’t address any of the reasons why not to daily drive one. Only why diesel makes more power and simplier.

Good side step.

Stay focused. I responded to your last statement. Apparently you didn’t attempt to read It as it furthered my point about it’s efficiencies.

Go ahead and believe that a gasoline powered truck with the same size engine (7.3l in my example) is more efficient. That was the original argument.

LMAO I ain't got the time or willingness to bother with this argument.

Not once did I say diesel was less efficient.

I never did either. I said from the start diesel made more power. But I’m being accused of not reading.

You not getting laid steve? What’s up man?

Wife told me again today we need a truck. Ran out of room in the Volt when shopping today and she watched me struggle to get in and out of the car. We will see how the jeep does after I'm done with it then might start looking seriously at trucks again.

So if I have time I might go out and test drive some stuff this coming couple of weeks.

Still not sure if I want to pay cash or finance something more expensive.

That being said, I guess I will put the Volt up for sale as well soon.

Might wait until April/May though then finally go and do something about all this. Need to take care of some other things first.
