Here's my $30,000 fix to Coop's problem.

Minus the fact that I get you all don't think it's needed. I don't get you being opposed to me making something like this? I figured some of you would offer actual helpful info. Like the rear pulley on the timing should have it to. At least that's what I get from looking at it....so I will have two.

Nope. There's only one belt on my engine. It's for the alternator, and it's in a place where it can't damage anything if it breaks.Devin wrote:That makes it worse Jeff!
The timing system is all chain drive, and my AC, power steering and coolant pumps are gear driven along the side of the engine. The high pressure pumps for the direct injection are driven by the camshafts.

Okay, couple things.
I still felt and heard compression...never had a dull spot for more than a quarter of the crank cog. Never had a bind. Was running when I shut it off.
What's the chances this is okay?
And
If I have preset cam gears....does that help or hurt me in this situation. I just hate that it may have skipped and may be in disbelief as the timing belt is TIGHT, tensioner pulley is correct, and tensioner is working.
Guess what I am asking, is there a way to tell without putting on a whole new belt and all the work?

Install the new belt. Crank the engine by hand to make sure it's not binding. Pull the valve covers to see if all the valves are moving as they should. Then do a compression test.

I have worked on a lot of engines, and I have to admit, the easiest one I have worked on is the 4.0 in the 2 XJ's and the LJ I have had. Not only are they reliable, they are also damn near bulletproof. Too bad they were not more efficient and are rather weak (decent torque = 235 --- but low on hp = 190). I am glad I have them in my jeeps though.

I've been perusing 4 door people haulers and just found out they made a diesel one.
Figured I'd ask the resident Bimmer guy as the top things I've ran across are the diesel 335 and the diesel liberty...I'd feel a little too girly in the liberty but usually try to avoid german cars.
