Finally had a chance to tear into the parts truck tonight. I got both driveshafts disconnected, pulled the companion flange from the rear diff (needed for my 3.5L axle swap) and dropped the entire front diff assembly out. That was a pain in the ass since I didn't jack the truck up and remove the hubs, but overall it went well. If I didn't have to work tomorrow, I'd have spent a few more hours on it.
I also pulled the ECU out of sheer curiosity. It had tamper seals on it, but whomever rebuilt it had mediocre soldering skills at best. The interesting thing is, it's an EEPROM ECU. There's not really much Steve and I can use that for since we're both doing swaps with flash ECUs and much newer electronics, but it's an interesting curiosity nonetheless.
I might dump the code out of it anyway, just for the fun of it. We'll see.
Am I nuts for wanting to keep the torsion bars? It looks like it'll still roll when it's sitting on the front bump stops. They don't take up much space, and I think I'll be in a world of hurt if I break one of mine. They're 25 years old. I can't help but wonder how long they'll last.

Glad you picked up the truck now? Torsion bars is a good idea if you plan to do a lot of 4x4 stuff. Ecu find is awesome too.

I'll be more glad when it's sitting in a junkyard. But so far, it's good. It's coming apart fairly easily, aside from the 20 lbs of oily dirt that was jammed up under the front skid plate.

Front skid. I've never seen a mid/lower skid.
Speaking of skid plates, do you have a transfer case plate? I have an extra now.
The differential cross member was packed solid with mud. This thing must have been buried to the frame in muck at some point.
Tonight was good. There were quite a few difficult and snapped bolts, but I don't give a damn since I'm not keeping the frame.
Finished getting the driveshafts out. The exhaust is detached from the engine. It's trapped by the transmission cross member, but that'll be resolved when I pull the motor.
There's no way the long bed fuel tank will fit a short bed truck. It's long enough to hit the rear axle, even if we could solve the problem of the mounting brackets. I'm going to list it on the truck forum. If nobody speaks up, it'll be going to the junkyard with the truck.
If all goes well tomorrow, I'll strip out the AC parts I want, and remove the fuel and electrical connections from the engine. That'll put me in a good place to pull the engine and trans on Saturday. The weather is supposed to be icy and shitty, and there's other wild cards in play, so it may not happen. If it doesn't, it won't be any fault of mine. We'll see.

BTW, this is how I bought it. No hood, no front end, no radiator, no tailgate. Smashed windshield.

It would have been nice to have it in my garage, but with it not running, it'd have been a huge pain to get it up our driveway and moved around.

Yea there is a lower skid that covers the front diff. Luckily mine still had one. Can't recall if I have a tc skid. I'll have to take a look. I was hoping that tank would fit. Too bad.

So why do you want a full sized truck now? Especially when you were complaining about not having money for a cheaper Raider.

Oh I want a raider. In fact a raider would work better around the small areas of my house.
The truck has a couple parts with it. Pulling a trailer is near impossible. Can't turn it around easily (have to jack knife it, and the shorter wheel base raider would be easier than a Yukon) but if I go to dump trash with a trailer they make me go to the top where all the trash is. It's vial, can't breath, muddy as all get out, and you then have to empty the trailer. If you just had a truck...you could park at the bottom and empty it in a trailer that they later take up top.
These truck come with power strait out the gate, no modifying, no swaps, no V6, just here it is. They are also newer for the same price.
So in short, I want a raider project vehicle, but I need a truck to do what I have in front of me, while I have no time or money for either.
