I will say this - final decision won't be until after mothers day weekend though. Need wife to go look at a couple things with me and we don't have time to go together until then. So will be a few weeks.
Re: WE ARE DOWN TO TWO! :runaway:
And you'll probably see 10 other cars to add to your list in the meantime.

serious about the $500 though, its a subaru ambassador coupon, keep it in your pocket until after you negotiate. the dealer basically gets reimbursed from SOA, so its nothing out of their pocket.

Re: WE ARE DOWN TO TWO! :runaway:
Ready for a disappointing conclusion?
Not getting anything.
Yet...
Wife and I went out and test drove a couple things and talked about money.
We both really like the new Forester Sport. BUT, and the biggest BUT of all, is the pay cut coming. Right now we could afford it without issue, but come Dec - we don't know. Starting Oct 1 my income will be about 1/3 of what I make now. Then come Dec I might not even have a job.
I pay less than $200/month for the Volt and get an average of 45-55 mpg (if you figure cost of electric into the equation). Based on current gas prices, and driving 15k a year, that is about $280 a month for a car plus gas. Insurance is high on it ($95/month), and I do pay for OnStar, but even after adding that in, can't find anything else out there with a total monthly payment that low, with mpg that high, that I can get in/out of comfortably unless I look at something older with very high mileage on it, and at that point reliability/maintenance costs becomes a factor. Even though I keep hurting my back getting in/out, we can't justify buying anything more expensive until we know what is happening after December.
So plan right now is to keep the Volt, maintain the XJ, and use it as needed until the lease is up on the Soul next spring.
At that point we should know more about job stuff, if we are buying out the Soul or giving it back, etc.
Hardest part is my back. Been hurting it more and more lately getting in/out of the damn Volt. That is why I keep looking. Hard to stop looking when back is hurting so much considering I need a healthy back for working out, strongman, etc.
Not getting anything.

Re: WE ARE DOWN TO TWO! :runaway:
Spoke with wife a bit the other night. We both really want/like the new 2019 Forester Sport. BUT it is too expensive for what we want to spend right now.
So plan is to find something cheap but reliable and comfortable to use for the next couple years in place of the Volt until they have been on the market long enough, we know jobs, and can get a nice USED one.
So yes, kind of took a step back. BUT I have eliminated many options and since keep the XJ we no longer "need" AWD or great ground clearance. Just something easy to get in/out of, comfortable to be in for long drives, decent mpg, and reliable. So doing a bit more research yet again then going to go look at some things.
Right now the new Tiguan is actually towards the top of the list. Can lease a new one for a few years for fairly cheap with that "sign and drive" thing they are doing. Sure a base model so radio is bleh and will be plain inside, but I fit ok, easy to get in/out, etc.

In before you talk to your wife again and decide to keep what you have for a few years until you have bought the house you wanted/know job situation/have enough in savings etc.

I know. But I hurt my back again Tuesday.
Re: WE ARE DOWN TO TWO! :runaway:
If your back hurts that much then definitely stay away from Fords. I was damn near crippled last Friday after spending the day driving our Ford at work.

I am sure the lifting doesn't help, but I can stay in a good position when I lift. Have to get into awkward position to get in/out of the car. Not the height that is the problem so much, but it doesn't help. Problem is the size of the door opening. I have to fold myself over in a weird way to get in/out.
But because it is so low I have to sit down and swivel in. I can't just put my foot in and sit down like I can in other things.

Re: WE ARE DOWN TO TWO! :runaway:
So drive the Jeep you keep complaining about. Its not got a payment. Get rid of the volt payment or keep it only as a nice car when needed.

Hands on wheel and top of door, right leg in first as far as you can get it towards the accelerator pedal, side butt over into seat, roll upper body into the seat, and pull in left leg. No folding required. If you are leaning forward to get in, the curvature of the a-pillar is going to make that quite difficult.
How tall are you? I'm 6' 1" and this works pretty well for me. Might have to duck just a bit to clear the roof if your torso is longer than mine, but better than trying to lean forward and squeeze under the A-pillar.

Car is too low to comfortably get in that way with my size. Used to get in that way until I got as big as I have. I end up having to "plop" in hard if trying to get in that way and tend to twist my knee in a weird way. I can get in that way in the XJ and Soul and is usually how I do it in 99% of cars, but can't comfortably on the Volt. Same with getting out. Have to put both feet out first, then scoot forward a bit, duck under, and then stand up. I am only 6'2, so not any taller than you, but I bet I am a lot "larger". That is where the problem is. The size of the door opening and position is what makes it hard. Easier to get in/out of a damn Camaro than the Volt for some reason for me.
