That Testarossa is pretty sweet... How can a person own it for so long and only put 900 miles on it? Seems like such a waste to have such a car and never drive it.

I guess with a Ferrari it actually can be an appreciating asset, but still.

I think the closest I've come to understanding this was an article about the Sultan of Brunei. Him and his brother loved buying cars. Not owning them or driving them, but buying them. Some people just like to be fawned over by elite entities like Ferrari and Bugatti. They'd go to Ferrari and ask for a custom one off that nobody else had. Being able to say you have six McLaren F1s is more important than actually having six McLarens.

There was an interview with one of the senior guys at Bugatti that touched on this too. They said "everywhere their customers go, they are first. So if they have a car, it must also be first."

The possession of the thing and the associated prestige is more important that what the thing is or does.

A good friend of mine used to live in Florida where he was tasked to acquire and build up a museum like collection of cars. He literally did it from the ground up - found the building, refurbished it to their design etc. He told me that he saw the truly ugly side of the car business - the guy he worked for didn't care about the cars whatsoever. He just cared about getting them. He would say "I want blah blah. Go find it!" and the second it was bought he didn't care whatsoever. My friend said he got so disgusted with it over time he lost all interest in the classic car business.. and this is a guy who has a beautiful GTO that he has torn down every nut and bolt himself on, had the engine rebuilt etc.. and now it has sat in storage for years since he lost all interest. Pretty sad really.

And I want that adventure van haha!

except he will (self admittedly) come back from an auction and tell his guys what he bought and they will let him know he already has them. but you are right, he drives them, loves them, restores them, and almost all of them are ready to drive at any time.

I had a boss who would buy cars just to let them sit until he found someone to buy them for more. He owned a bunch of companies in a large complex. One of the warehouses was filled with random old cars. I remember a late 50s corvette with less than 1000 miles on it in there. Along with some Model Ts, a few old Cadillacs, some BMW Isetta, etc. Had a Viper I got to ride in a couple of times as well. He daily drove a Boxster I think.

Daily drove a boxer?! So he was "that" type of guy?

Edit: besides that weren't there worries of oil pump failor or bearings going out? A guy a work had one and he always talked about how it was a problem. Sounded very very 3/s esk talk.

Boxsters are fantastic driving cars. Other than the issues with the Intermediate Shaft Bearing on the 986/987 cars they are very reliable cars. I'd drive the shit out of one if I could justify the expense.
