emissions laws? what are those
Federal laws that we largely ignore.
Maybe I read the article incorrect but I took it as the Manufacturer needs to have all there vehicles AVERAGE 35mpg when you factory them all in.
To mean that means a lot of Rio's, Aveo's, and Smart Cars and everyone gets 1 car worth a shit for performance.
Exactly. It's a
fleet average. So for every 22 mpg truck, you'll need a couple 45 mpg Aveos to make up for it.
One of the things that pisses me off is that the people making these laws somehow expect the manufacturers to build a car that is invincible in a crash, has 47 airbags, heated 64 way power leather seats, triple zone climate control, 12 disc DVD changers, distance and lane sensing cruise control, enough power to move that 6000 lbs worth of bulk.....but still get 30+ mpg in the city. Oh yeah....and it has to be affordable to the general public too.
We had 40 and 50 mpg cars 15 years ago. It's called "strip everything out of it and give it a tiny little engine". Something like a Honda CRX HF, with cloth seats, a 1.8L 90hp engine and
optional air conditioning.
The market does not want that kind of car, so the government can just ram it down people throats, or do like they normally do and just blame the evil auto manufacturers for being lazy and not building this magical car that has all the safety and convenience features people want while only being powered by fairy farts and smiles.

IC engines are sooooooooo the wave of the past.
I hate these ridiculous standards, because it not only kills manufacturers it hurts large cities as well, and allows people to move farther and farther away from major cities with all this new range they're getting.
However, this needs to happen to force people into thinking about new, alternative ways to make cars go.

It's starting to happen now. Jeep is coming out with CRD's for the grand cherokee and liberty (they've been here for a while but most states have too high of emissions standards). Give it 5 years and there will be a bunch out here. Might be wishful thinking on my part since I work for the company who's making the new filters for them and I'm going to try to move Maximal Performance into the diesel market.

I'd like to make a awd diesel sports car, would just need a little creative engineering to get the rev's on the motor higher than normal diesel motors.

This isn't going to be a problem. Detroit wil just dust off some of those 300mpg carburetors patents they bought up and shelved.......

that's probably not too unrealistic.
We've gone to the moon..we've elected bush twice..the idea that we can't create a 100mpg car is absolutely ludicrous. The only reason we haven't, imo, is because you-know-who would lose money.
Why aren't fully electric cars the majority these days? You don't think it's 'cause they're expensive, do you?
And i like conspiracy theories

Rumor is, Audi may drop a diesel in the R8. They've proven you can win at LeMans with one. It's only a matter of time before they drop one in a street car.
