Winter beater shopping

Re: Winter beater shopping
Ive owned both of those so Ill chime in. The montero has a better lift out of the gate. It also has a superior 4wd system. It really digs in. You will like it. You get more interior space as well as much more creature comforts.
Only things I didnt like about the 01 is the brake accumulators go bad. Sounds like a demonic bird chirping. Side mirrors are garbage. Independent suspension is really smooth but the truck suffers from body roll as its top heavy. Engine is also a bit lacking. Not terrible though.
Get the montero. Better yet get the 98-99 as its the all around best, and you can already tune it.
In for story on the max.

I haven't seen any gen 2.5s around here in a while. I'm not going to travel very far for this. Monte guy didn't call me back. I might try again on Friday.
I think about all the things we could have done, all the miracles we could have achieved, if we were all just a little bit better than it turns out we are.

3.8 for $2700. My first thought is, what's wrong with it?

Re: Winter beater shopping
..they are amazingly fun to drift in the snow haha. My parents had a 240 when I was young and my grandfather had a 245 (the 240 wagon). Both insanely fun to drift.
Re: Winter beater shopping
Vira's dad has a couple of 240s. One doesn't run and the other is on its last legs. I just sent him that link. His reply was "Jump on it. I'll buy it".
I'm going to try to push him to get rid of something else in his fleet of junk as a pre-condition. Maybe I'll buy the 240 and then sell it to him once he does that.

Even better. You get the 75 with all the accessories minus the complications of MIVEC. Ive got a junker 2003 here that I get pick up just for the motor.

Re: Winter beater shopping
It's not far from Aaron. I just don't know that I want to take the risk on it. It's about 1-2k lower than any other 3.8 I can find. It sets my spidey-sense tingling.
In other news, I might own that 240 by the end of the weekend

Re: Winter beater shopping
What are your worries? Im sure you could diagnose any issues real quick.

Re: Winter beater shopping
Jumped timing, excessive bearing wear, dodgy trans....
I don't mind small stuff, but I've got enough on my plate without worrying about more heavy labor.
The electronic throttle bodies on those things aren't cheap either. Recall they're specific to that Montero and don't interchange with any other Mitsu.

Re: Winter beater shopping
Im pretty sure you already know where 5 engines are and could have that shit swapped in a weekend. Your buying a 140k mile engine. Run higher weight oil, deal with a trans that isnt perfect, enjoy it being a beater.

Re: Winter beater shopping
Actually, I don't. Gen 3s with the 3.5 are rare enough around here. I've only ever found 1 gen 3.5 with the 3.8L. There's where I got my throttle body for my truck.
A 'less than perfect' automatic trans is one that's about to fail. If this was back at the beginning of spring, I might take the risk. But I need something I can drive through the winter with little to no downtime.
I fucked up and put myself in a jam, and I'm trying not to make things worse than they already are.

It's not far at all. You can come here next weekend instead of us coming there and pick it up!

Worst case is you don't get it, and we still get to hang out.

This is true. And you get your wing. We'll need to discuss it either way. Vira has a work event on the night of the 28th, so that's a factor.

All the ones I found on Dallas Craigslist are Sport models, and none are any better than what I can get locally. There's one nice Gen 1, but I don't want that one.
