Because for the same money, you could buy a real car with the same or better same gas mileage. Golf, Jetta, Civic, Corolla, Cruze, etc.

This isn't Europe. With the possible exception of super dense urban areas like NYC and Chicago, nobody needs a car that small. It's for someone who wants to be conspicuously "eco", but wants to show off in a snooty European branded car.

Frankly, it is amazing how poor of gas mileage you get in one of those SmartCars. 32-ish, which we could get in our 2007 Eclipse GT or even our old ‘96 Dodge Avenger. Hell, my Stingray can do that cruising on the highway in Eco mode.

Not really sure where the “smart” part comes into play with those.

Around here it's not so much the vehicle as the method of operating it that would make me lose respect for someone. The most popular vehicles around here seem to be Dodge Chargers, Dodge Challengers, Ford Mustangs, Jeep Wranglers, and crew cab pickups from the big 3. Apparently all of them are incapable of driving less than 15 - 20 mph over the speed limit, don't come equipped with turn signals, but do come equipped with a cell phone.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

My Swift gets 44mpg and I used to beat the piss out of that thing. Swapping in the 1.6 cost me .1 mpg on the exact same drive and it'll light up the tires from a 2nd punch.
