But that said, the improved suspension and performance got me interested in a z06.
Just upgrade the coupe with the Z06 parts :D It's not like on the C6 where the difference between the base and Z06 is much greater than on the C5.

Part of the appeal of getting a vette is to have a daily driver with a warranty so that I don't feel obligated to modify or upgrade. :D

That may be a consideration. If I can find a low mileage z06 at a great price, then that's what I'll do. If not, and if the right c5 coupe comes around first, I'd go that route instead. I'm not sure if I would upgrade the suspension immediately... that is a possibility.

Are the cam profiles different between the z06 and C5? I was under the impression that that is where the HP/TQ increase came from. If it is a simple matter of replacing the intake and exhaust, that is something I plan on doing regardless of trim.

There's probably a couple parts I'm missing, but this is what I know is different between the LS1 and LS6

Intake manifold
Cam
Heads
Exhaust
Block (all late production LS1s had LS6 blocks. The bottom part of the block incorporated passageways for improved bay to bay breathing)
Slight tune differences

So basically get yourself a nice street head and cam package, a nice catback, and a reflash. You'll be past stock C5Z power levels and still have a tame, drivable street car.

Yeah, it's not simply a new cam in the same LS1. The suspension difference isn't what sets the Z06 apart. It's the drivetrain. The engine has obvious differences, but the close ratio transmission, and different rear end gearing are a big difference. Then there is the obvious differences in the body to make it a bit lighter and larger brakes and wheels.

If you want to upgrade a regular C5 to Z06 spec you'll spend $7-8k (including buying bigger wheels).

Here is where it's really at:
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthr ... ?t=1809630

So take a stock brand new C6 base model and add a K&N Intake to it, do a little dyno tune, and for ~$300 you just gained 40RWHP and have a car putting down 415HP to the wheels.

Not bad when you can get a Base model with Z51 package and Navigation for $45k
