There are a lot of things that need to be changed on 3si in order for it to be a good forum again. I used to fully love surfing 3si back when i first joined in 2006. Apparently that was after the "Golden Era" but whatever, it was still a lot better than it is today.

One thing that i think really needs to be changed is the search function. Yes, it can be made to work, but it sucks. Unless you actually have been using the forums for quite a while and are familiar with everything, the search button is more or less useless.

Also a lot of people don't bother to customize every little part of there search (some because they are too NEW to know where to look, or what to search for), and type in things like "best coilovers" and end up with every topic with over 100 pages, but nothing about coilovers.

I really want 3si back.... :(

On another note I think we NEED the TANP on 3si. I see it as a hazing for the newcomers....those that can't handle it end up leaving.

Kudos :bigthumb:

3si was cool in '99-'02; it started going downhill fast in '03-'04. As far as I'm concerned, pretty much everyone posting on BAWC as an ex-pat of 3si is a noob. :D

3si fails as a car forum. It's the only car forum that I've frequented that is so full of itself for a lack of a better term. Lots of stupid policies, lack of good moderation, poor mix of members...bleh.

Most car forums are frequented by a majority of cool/like-minded people in similar age groups. 3si seems to be filled by a mixture of bitter because they bought the heavy "underdog" VR4 25-35yo, punk 15-20yo who think their busted VR4 of pimp'd out base is hawt shit, and "wish I still owned that '68 Camaro i had as a teen" 50-60yos...then of course the 20% cool owners who are just happy to have the car. It used to be 50%, but most of those people stopped posting on 3si and/or sold their car.

If you need to learn something about the 3000GT just search, it's easy.

I have lurked on 3si for a while, I didn't become a member until I actually bought a 3000GT, but I too have noticed a decline. Lots of older members no longer posting, lots of noobs asking the same questions without searching. If i have a question or something i usually search for 5-10 minutes before i post a new thread. 5-10 minutes is worth not getting flamed. We need to show the noobs the correct way of doing things without scaring them off, otherwise the platform will die because it will be just a bunch of vets with all the knowledge who scare the noobies away. Even with a lot of the vets gone, nearly everything you need to know is already on the site, just waiting to be searched for. The only exception of course is new products and new developments, which both should have enough discussion to not be a problem. The platform is 17 years old, nearly every problem that can be discovered has already been discovered and has at least 5 threads about said problem.

Maybe disable the create new thread button until the new user registers a certain number of searches?

A lot of you know that Alan and I haven't seen eye to eye in a big way in the past. So, you know I am definately not leg humping.

Personally I think 3Si has come a ways and so has Alan in his moderation. I think the addition of more moderators was definately a good move. I think adding more would be even better. I think re-doing the layout of 3Si and the way the sub forums show up will make navigation easier.

Sure I think sometimes there is some over moderation that occurs. I got mad at Tool Man a couple of weeks ago about me making a post in A/V which I'm not talking about just yet due to a surprise that hasn't been presented yet. Pictures would have been posted in the thread eventually but I didn't have everything together yet and he closed it. But either way I actually thought before I posted it to think where it would have been deemed appropriate.

I just think with the sheer amount of volume 3Si has been gaining and now that there is a newer faster server, maybe moderating more heavily on the newer additions would prevent a lot of the "bashing"

I am sorry but there is nothing you can change about the search function. You enter in words and it looks for them. Nothing more, nothing less. I have never had a problem and the reason it brings up 100 pages is its been asked and answered 100 pages. Read them all. That way you understand why the people regurgitate(sp) the same thing they read. But I want to know where they read that and why. Take the time and learn.

I read some of the replies on various pages here. Although the noobs do post a problem, unfortunately, the noobs that really want to learn about these cars get thrown into the category that every noob is worthless. Another unfortunate thing is that a lot of old school folks don't have the patience to answer common questions anymore.

So don't blame just the noobs for the down fall of 3SI.

Wow Mike and everyone was really being a dick in that post. You asked a vague question, but I don't understand why it would piss so many off the way it did.

Geeze.

that thread is an example of why TANP generally comes off looking like...well, insert whatever word here... more than the person they're attacking

It's not just the noobs. It's poor moderation and the antics of TANP and people like them AND the elitist assholes who think their shit don't stink. Sure they might think they are "helping" by being total assholes to everyone as a "hazing" or because their tech knowledge is godlike  , but it's a fucking MESSAGE BOARD on the INTERNET. It shouldn't be "the strong survive" or "those who put up with getting bashed can stay". You just create an atmosphere where half of the "old-timers" are sick of the antics and don't want to be around anymore and half of the good new guys think the board sucks and don't stick around. You're left with idiots, the elitists, the noob-bashers, and a handful of people who are there simply because they signed up in '99 and are stuck for life

What's worse is that half of the noob-bashers (don't want to single out TANP) can't even answer any good questions about the car, hell...some of them don't even own a 3/S anymore and when they did they weren't contributors to anything tech related anyway.

Like I said...the problem is when 3si went from a fun message board to a bad mix of e-heros and idiots.

EDIT: I don't have a personal problem with the guys of TANP, I like 'em all...I just don't agree with "hazing" for a message board...it's stupid because the internet is not real life, but I guess it's hard for some people to ignore others :p
Let me let you in on a little secret. Ekool doesn't give a fuck whether or not we have great information, great forum, people happy, etc.. He wants members and advertisement money. That's why 3SI looks like a NASCAR event.

So, I doubt you can ever fix it. Learn to live with it and watch it decline as younger people have access to the platform and the older gents move on with their lives.
I think this is a serious problem. 3si has this deluge of noobs (a a few "new members"), and at the same time the vets are fading into the history books.
There is no longer enough time for the "know-a-bit"s to become the "all knowing" before the real all knowing leave, and the know-nothings take over.

Its like a populations (in terms of platform knowledge) thats all teenagers and newborns. theres no "adults" to speak of left, all the "aging" members seem to be fading away

I lurked on 3si for a couple years before i bought my car, and atleast a year before i actually joined. By the time i bought my car, i didnt know everything, but i knew what i was getting into, I knew the terminology, and i knew how to find answers to my problems.
If all the noobs were this way, then we wouldnt have to call them noobs.
When i first got my car, and search didnt find my particular problem, i used the new owners forum, and lo-and-behold, i usually got some sort of answer. Now i dont even go in that forum cuz its so full of BS.

Another problem i had, and i know others who feel the same way, before i became a paying member, all i had access to was the information. Once i had access to the members lounge, i spent too much of my "3si time" in there, and less and less actually reading real problem posts and responding to them
