2005 SL65 AMG. So much want.

I doubt there's any options for a warranty just given the age and nature of the beast.
It sounds like the owner unloaded it to pick up another toy. The salesman said he was one of their higher end customers.

If you have $10k in cash laying around that you can use if big repairs are needed, then go for it. If not, then I'd pass.

I would strongly consider this myself but I'm not a huge fan of the SL.

I've got plenty of cash, I'm ahead on my Audi, and I've got no debt besides the house and the car.
But when there's this many people saying not to do something, I probably shouldn't.
Life is funny that way. You want something for a long time, and when you finally have the means to obtain it, you find out it's not all it's cracked up to be.

Didn't work on the Audi...
I'm actually saying go for it. Many of the big failures recently happened and got fixed.

But you also have to follow your heart. I have made many decisions in my life that people told me I shouldn't do, but I am glad I made them.
If you really want it, and you can do it, then do it.

Meh people tell me I'm stupid for doing my races. Each of my big races are around $2K. You don't want to know how much money I spend on that hobby each year..
You are aware of the potential risks. Life is short. If it is something you really want to do, analyze it and make a risk vs reward decision. My sister always says "Life is too short to drink cheap wine". The older I get the more I realize she is right.

Honestly, do these things break that often? With regular care and maintance? If they do, jeff do you have a vehicle you can drive when it's down? Are you okay working on it?
I really think it should be pretty reliable to about 100-110k miles. Maybe I'm wrong but if I didn't have a kid on the way, and that price being a price I could spend on a vehicle I wouldn't hesitate for a second to buy it.

They do have problems, but this one looks to have most of them fixed already. Fairly recently too. The biggest problems are the coil packs and the hydraulic suspension.
The truck is about a month away from being fit for daily driver duty.
I need to see how much it'd cost to insure this thing. That could change the equation quite a bit. I'm also pissed that Missouri doesn't provide a tool for estimating personal property tax. I don't remember if it's based on the current value of the asset, or some factor of the original value. Current value isn't much more than my Audi, in which case it's no big deal. If it's based on the original value of $190,000 vs $62,000 on the S5...

Wouldn't it be based on the last time it was appraised? I know I had to ask them to take into account my houses value when everything crashed. Sounds like a simple phone call to find out and fix if need be.

Re: 2005 SL65 AMG. So much want.
Two things I'm concerned with.
1. A merger announcement in the next week or so.
2. The 'what have I done?' grumbles...for days when something does break.
Because it WILL break. If I may have a job in 6+ months AND there IS an understanding that this car will break, and it will probably be expensive, and you will need to drive another car, then, then I'm cool with it.

Whenever you use forceful and overt verbal persuasion to try to convince others to see things your way, they're probably not listening to what you say, Instead they're looking for every error in you your logic and mistakes in your facts, all the while constructing counterarguments. Worse still, they don't merely believe you're wrong; they need you to be wrong in order to protect the status quo. And since the final judge exists in their own head, you lose every time. - The Influencer

Re: 2005 SL65 AMG. So much want.
They update it yearly, but there doesn't seem to be a way to find out even an approximate number until you get the bill at the end of the year. It's annoying.
I checked the license plate fees, and the V12 AMGs aren't even on the chart. But basing it on the regular V12 TTs, my license plate would only go from $48 to $78 every two years.

From what I've found its the same as Arkansas and calculated based on the current value. But it could be different county to county.

I say get it. All the major stuff has been recently replaced, so you know it should be good for a while. The only thing I would be concerned about is the insurance cost over the Audi. And if it does break, you can do the work yourself, and you have other vehicles to drive. So I say why not. You only live once right

How much of the work can be done himself, that doesn't need special scanner tools?

Re: 2005 SL65 AMG. So much want.
What's that got to do with anything? I've got those for the Audi, Mazda, and the Mitsus. I'd get the system for the Benz too.Vira wrote:How much of the work can be done himself, that doesn't need special scanner tools?

Re: 2005 SL65 AMG. So much want.
Well that was unexpected.
So I pay the insurance on both of my cars, and Vira's Mazda. If I replace the Audi with the Benz, my bill would go up, but it'd still be slightly lower than it was when I still had my Stealth. So about $45/mo more than I'm paying today.
I expected it to be considerably more.

I didn't. That's not a car kids will buy and wreck. The Audi us closer to the "irresponsible kid with money" price point. It's also a more attractive nameplate for that.
How many herrafrush Audi's do you see vs luxobarge Benz cars?
Fwiw an 08 cayenne turbo is cheaper full coverage than my 01 explorer is liability only.
