Looks like another day of doing nothing at work... So lets talk RFID keyless ignition systems!

Has anyone used this before?
http://www.digitalguarddawg.com/automob ... -i/product

The price is up there ($450) but it seems a lot better than the Chinese knock offs in that the antennas have range.

The system can be setup in auto or manual mode. The difference being the ignition will turn on every time the remote is in range auto magically or just when you push the button on the remote. The manual mode seems more appealing. Operation of the car wouldn't be any different than pushing the unlock button on the keyless for the doors. Only for the Exocet it would operate the ignition instead.

The idea for this stems from using the hydra ECU instead of the OEM ECU for the immobilizer. Would at least give the Exocar some version of security. The box will be mounted in the dash under the hood which will be locked via key. If the remote dies or gets lost, I can still get access.

The only drawback to this whole setup is I would lose the steering wheel lock. Debating if this is actually something I need to even worry about....

Thoughts? Input? Suggestions?

Know nothing about the rest (other than that the keyless start is about the only thing I like on Angel's new car) but know a little bit about RFID. We were using it for a project at work but dumped it for BLE due to it being tricky to control it. Range and readability can be a bitch with no line of sight. Probably won't be a problem in this scenario due to short range though. Oh interference can be a pain as well. We had to swap out all our cordless phone headsets at work hah.

My logic is, the shorter the range the better. However, the knock offs from china require you to put the transmitter inside the antenna. They have no range at all...

Here's one of the knock offs I was talking about.

The problem is, you have to get the tag into the circular antenna in order for it to work.

I have the kit justin made, it's pretty damn cool really. Mine has two round antenas, you just have to be standing next to the car for it to work. It also has a card reader, you have to have it 1-2 inches from the bar sensor (mounted on the pillar) for it to work (in case you loose the fob).

I wonder if the knock offs are missing the ranged antenna and only have the card reader antenna.

Did the ad say that you had to have the fob inside antenna? I bet you just have to be close….real close if only one antenna.

I bet this one would work fine for you. The exocar is so small that one would work just fine. Also there is no sheet metal to block the signal. Just mount the round antenna to the roll bar.

What are good places to mount the antenna(s)?
Antennas should be mounted on a Non-Enclosed and Non-Metallic material such as clear glass or plastic trim panels. Recommended placements for the Front-Antenna is on the top-left corner of the front windshield and bottom-left corner of the rear windshield for the Rear-Antenna. The Bypass-Antenna can be placed around the edge of the front windshield so it can sense the Bypass Transponder Card within one inch away from outside of the vehicle. Do not place antenna in locations that will be shield by metallic material.

Was thinking of putting it under the dash so that when I reach for the start button, with the fob in hand, the ignition would turn on.

This is misleading, you just need to be near the antenna for it to work.

Look in the Q/A section. The range for the fob from the antenna is 3mm.

Doing some research from guys using this particular setup confirmed you must be very close if not inside the circle.

The advanced keys one that paul linked to the picture is the one I would recommend. I was going to get it for the MR2 when i was planning on doing this, it seems to get the best reviews.

Ahhh I see now, the tag must really suck. You don't want that. You want to just leave that shit in your pocket so you just sit down and it's ready to start. Might as well have keys if you have to put it up to the ring. If you kill the engine you will have to reach in your pocket and pull it out to fire it back up. You need something with more range…..or mount it in your driving glove lol.

Looked at them. They don't have a "non-keyless entry" version. This car doesn't have door locks.

I also don't want an alarm system. It'll just drain the battery and go off at random times.

umm, you dont need to hook up door locks and such. You dont even have to lose the steering wheel lock, you just keep a key in the ignition. the ignition relay of the unit will be disabled unless the smart key is present.

its not an alarm per se, but it does have security functions built in

Sounds like they are using near field readers and non-powered RFID chips if you have to get that close.
