Bought a Miata Because Exocar

Insurance companies are driven by data. Hard data about exposure to financial risk. They have zero data on your car. No accident performance data, no historical owner data, no repair cost data...nothing. So they don't know how much risk they're exposed to. Which means they either don't cover you at all, or they run your rate through the roof.

About the only suggestion I can offer is to check with the guys importing 25 year old JDM cars and Land Rovers. They've got a similar lack of data. Especially the Skylines. Someone is covering them. Try to hunt down someone who got one legally though. The scammers who imported it through Florida and titled it as a 240 or Maxima don't really count.

They really should insure it under something similar to the SMART Cars. Those are tubular in construction as well.

They're not tubular. And they have a closed body. And crash test data provided by Mercedes.

Believe it or not, I'm having a lot of issues getting classic car insurance for the RX7. Most companies rate them by year of manufacturering not by age.... Sucks that the state of PA recognizes it as a classic but insurance companies can't.

Hmm my memory of a youtube video failed me. I do remember the body/frame being quite a bit more rigid that typical passenger cars.

It's extremely rigid. Mostly because of the small size. But it's definitely not a some scaffolding with tires and a license plate

Really? only issue I was running into was the car wasn't stored in a garage. Hopefully soon to take care of.

Fellow Exocet owner suggested I call Rally's (I had filled out an online form last week but they never got back to me) and to my amazement, they offered me quite a deal. Not just on the Exocet but all my cars (RX7, 2x Miatas and Mazda 2). The lady even knew what an Exocet was when I called!

While I'm limited to 3000 miles on each of the recreational vehicles, where the $$ is saved is the Liability side is written in a way so that all the cars share the same coverage with the understanding that I'm one guy and won't be driving all the cars as the same time. Basically I the driver am the Liabilty, not the car itself.

Another bonus is they will not drop my coverage knowing I will take these cars on the track. I need to sign a form understanding that I'm not covered for damages done to my car on the track. Huge relief there!

I am, however, forbidden to drive the cars to work... But hey, I'm happy with the other conditions and the price so it's worth it.

Sounds like quite a deal.

I don't see how they can restrict you from driving the cars to work at all. As long as you stay under the mileage cap, who cares where and when you drive it?

How do they audit the mileage? I looked into MO classic car registration and they require you to keep a log book in the car. I think the limit is 1500 miles per year.

By the year. Total I drove 2700 miles last year on all my cars. So 3000 a year on each car shouldn't be an issue.

Coop, it's "agreed value" meaning it won't depreciate. They did require that I "prove" my cars value by showing receipts but that's the norm.

On just the Exocet with $30k coverage was $380 a year. Still waiting on the quote for the other cars.

Calling them seems to get you what you need. They seem to be a small time company.

Jeff: I have no idea why I can't drive it to work... Probably some ploy on words since liabailty is detirmined by your distance commute to and from work.

As for reporting milage, I don't need to do that. However, I needed to report the milage as of today and then it's checked again when I make a claim. Say in 2 years I have 7k miles on the car, they will deny my claim.

It's just mild steel and he got the chassis "used". Basically it had been sitting around in some dudes garage uncoated and rusting away.

Ben used a company Safeco to insure his spyder for $40k with a $1k deductible. They were willing to insure Em's Stealth at $30k for around $850/year with a $1k deductible. Try them for the RX7.

Ended up finding a place to insure all my cars. Everything is good now.
