How off is it? I think you're always are going to have to shim tools , especially if you grind your own.
Re: I did a thing.
I have a bunch to grind my own but this is set for a standard 1/2 inch tool for an insert. I already made a spacer to make the HF ones work but even the HF ones are too big to go in the one tool my dad got.
We did buy a new top for it. It’s huge. Should also take up the distance between the vise and the mill. Even with the mill all the way down, it still needed 6” to reach the vise. So we were gonna do a spacer but this will be better.

Re: I did a thing.

Here I go.

Shit. You can tell the new metal that broke. It was already broke. I just tightened it and it gave. Also oddly enough. That is suppose to have a handle on both sides but it only has one. So it was already on its way out.

So what does suck is that this vise is also the tool holder for the lathe. So it keeps everything center. Also you can’t just buy this vise. So rebuild it I must. Good thing the part that broke is only 35 bucks and it only took me 5 mins to take it apart.

Re: I did a thing.
I have failed so many times on this. But given it’s my first time really using a mill I can’t be mad at myself.

Broke a damn bit

Almost done cutting away the back. But had to stop. The rest will be finished with a belt sander….that I need to go buy. Lol.

Re: I did a thing.
You need to work on your feeds and speeds. You should need very little sanding after milling something if it's done right.

Re: I did a thing.
I’m sanding to make the angle instead of using the mill. I didn’t want to step down pass, step down, pass, step down, pass. The finish I’m having is fine.aaronatstate wrote: ↑Wed Apr 24, 2024 7:30 pm You need to work on your feeds and speeds. You should need very little sanding after milling something if it's done right.

Totally. I am stressed and still need to make another one and the ears. Then it may not be strong enough. Lol.

and Aaron if your talking about the cut in the bottom it was because my bit (it’s a lathe bit) got super dull and I didn’t realize. Should have.

Good or bad this is it right now. Gotta learn somehow. I’m gonna go get a sander and get the angles. Then I gotta do it again. Lol. Hopefully I learned some so the next one goes smoother!

Re: I did a thing.
Man, that looks pretty bad. Does your rig have a lot of play, causing all those inconsistencies?

Re: I did a thing.
Lol thanks….yes the added lathe top does have play. It loads up then bounces. The one that came with it is solid as can be.

The only thing I’m really sad about is the spot for the ears. I didn’t wanna go all the way through so it wouldn’t scratch up the boat. But when I make the ears it will cover those marks so no one will be able to tell but you all.
I still have a little sanding left. Also will paint it black. But for now it’s to work on the second one with hopes I can fix play in the vise so it doesn’t wobble.

Yeah. I’m sure there is some way to tighten things up. I think I have a plan to get this next one cut out either way.

Re: I did a thing.
Second one coming along so much better. First, half way through the first I bought a little vacuum to get all the shavings out of the way. That helped. Second, found how to tighten up the vise. That was huge. Third, set it up strait. The other one I didn’t even try to set strait (no idea why) so I couldn’t just turn one axis. I had to slowly move both.
This was 4 cuts. And my battery ran out in the vacuum so I stopped for the night as that thing is a huge help. Two cuts one way two cuts the other. Half then half. It’s ready for the spot for the ears. I broke the bit that did the middle cut so I don’t know if I’m just gonna use the file for that or what.

Re: I did a thing.
so you were trying to cut a straight line by moving two axes at once?

Re: I did a thing.
By the time I laid it out and made my first cut I didn’t realized I messed up. I should have flipped the metal and started over. But at first it wasn’t that hard, so I just went with it. It wasn’t till the secondish pass at barely cutting anything I realized. I get this sounds really stupid. But I was on my 10th fuck up of the whole thing. Bought this thing months ago. And was just trying to get something done. So I wasn’t thinking. We’ve all been there. Guess what. I’ll set them up better from here on out.tabasco122 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 26, 2024 1:49 am so you were trying to cut a straight line by moving two axes at once?

Re: I did a thing.
Round 2. I still have some play in the table I’m trying to track down as it’s effecting me. This is only lightly sanded to get any burrs off. So overall, MUCH better.
