Sand molding

Post by DCIV »

I have a stainless steel transfer case and I was curious if anyone knows if that was done when it was made?

If its stainless it was probably done out of one piece in a CNC. Sand molding is a cast thing. You can cast stainless parts, but why?

What kind of finish does it have?

All the aftermarket transfer cases I have seen for a 3/S have been CNC'd.

It’s a smooth finish.

Is cast stainless stronger than cast aluminum? I would have to say yes. But I agree my guess is it was milled.

What's his definition of smooth? Some may say the stock cast aluminum pieces are "smooth"

Post a picture Coop, we could tell you easily then.

Well seeing as it’s attached to the car with a brace around it, wouldn’t really be a pic.

The price of a billet SS block large enough to make a transfer case housing would be like $1000 in itself. Plus the machine time would be insane.
