Good luck finding generic tools that can do all the other codes in the car. That's just diagnostics. You still need paywalled access to the OEM programming tools to replace the failed parts.

Don't side track the issue here. We're talking about regular service and repair of failed components. Not some espionage bullshit.
My Ethos works just fine. I pay 400 bucks every three years :d ontknow: My HPtuners software worked on a 2017 camaro, and my hondata also still works.

Tuning is far from dead.
HP Tuners page with pricing: https://www.hptuners.com/product/zr1-mo ... e-service/

$2000 for the ECU (2500 without core)
$300 for the HPT programming hardware and software
$500 worth of programming credits for the ECM
$200 for one-time trans controller unlocking, and you have to ship it to them
$200 worth of programming credits for the TCM
$150 worth of credits for the chassis control module (I think this is mainly for tuning the adjustable exhaust)
$150 worth of credits for the secondary port fuel injection control module. The LT5 runs both direct and port injection.

So $3500 if you've got an automatic trans, and that's before anyone has actually tuned the thing.

ZR1 is going to be a one year run, so production will only be 2500ish cars. The market for this just isn't that big.

I guess it's cool they found a workaround, but damn...you could build one hell of a Z06 with the money you save by going down that road instead.
Truth, and I never liked the credit system they implemented. But I hate SCT even more. F waiting 15 minutes to load tunes with a hand held.

But we're talking major player OEM tuners with that. Give me aftermarket every time.

Hondata may be the only exception. I tuned an s2000 yesterday and it was like cake on a spring morning. Or something.

I'll believe it when I see it. They blew it with the ZR1. All the fancy encryption isn't worth a damn if you can just replace the module with a custom one with known keys.
I think about all the things we could have done, all the miracles we could have achieved, if we were all just a little bit better than it turns out we are.

They already are. If GM starts authenticating the other modules against each other then things will get hairy.

I don't know. ECUs are getting so complex that they're able to do sanity checks against other values. In the old days you could do things like fake out the MAF values to make it run richer or leaner. But now the ECU has a mathematical model of the engine so it knows that the airflow should be within a very specific range when accounting for values like RPM, road speed, trans gear, baro, coolant, IAT, etc etc.

Get too far outside that range and it throws codes and goes into limp mode.
