$10k Full Size Truck - Are there any good ones?

Anyone know what is a more common problem? AFM issues on the GMT900 platform or the transmission issues on the GMT800 platform?

Still toying around with getting an Avalanche, but not sure what platform. Was pretty set on the GMT900 before but can get a nice lower mileage GMT800 for a LOT cheaper. So wasn't sure. Either way if I get the 800 it would be a 2004-2006, or a 2009+ 900. The 07-08 has the same transmission as the 800 with the AFM issue of the 900.

The issue with the afm is that when it cuts power to 4 cyl it also cuts oil to those areas as well so the engines can die a premature death. You can disable it though.

The body style after the 06’s seem to have less rust from looking online.

I know I can disable it. Just trying to figure if worth the premium. Plus if a west coast vehicle rust isn't an issue.

For instance I can get a 05 with 100k on it for $10k or a 07 with 150k for $12k or an 09+ will 100k for $20k

It comes down to accsssories for me. I didn’t get the 07 with 120k for 12 because it was base model. But my 05 does have some rust under it. Nothing I’m worried about but it’s there, but I paid 8,200 for loaded.

Can you provide a link to this please? What I am seeing is that it just shuts oil off to the lifters, allowing them to collapse, and the other components still get oil as normal. I see that the lifters can fail. Like I said in another thread, a friend at work had to replace his AFM system because of a failed lifter, but his truck had 212k miles on it when it went out, and his engine is still running just fine after the fix.

This. It cuts oil pressure to the lifters. Other pertinent parts still get oil.

It’s just what I’ve been seeing as I don’t have it. Yes it cuts oil to the lifters. Read multiple posts on how they lose compression in those cylinders but the system does work for a long time. Not 500-800k so it’s a wash though right?

They are starting to lose compression because the lifters are wearing out.

This is 100% different from what you said earlier that it cuts oils and implied the engines die a premature death due to oil starvation.

Fact is if you use the proper weight oil from a reputable brand, the system and engine should not die a premature death.

Yeah I'm just gunna quote you. Because a premature engine failure is a lot different than causing 'issues'

The only reason it dies a premature death is people tend to choose not to repair them when they fail.

Yeah....everyone in the world does maintance on their vehicles lol. By that logic almost all issues with vehicles are fixable and every vehicle will last a long long time. I mean what’s that Mercedes that had the head bolt issues? Everyone would change that day one after they found out and thus it’s never an issue. Again it’s just what I read as I don’t have it so people obviously have issues.

Yes you were way off. The engines do not die a premature death because of oil being cutoff. They die a premature death due to lack of maintenance, like any other vehicle.

That basically sums up what I am trying to figure out. $20k, newer, safer, reliable, but payments. Or $10k and no payments.

I thought you needed it loaded? Pick what you are your non negotiable first. Then move everything around it.

I would be fine with something not loaded and just add a back-up camera and nice radio. Really only things I "need". Everything else is just what I want.
